Abraham Soblet "L'Aine" From the book "The Sublett (Soblett)
Family of Manakintown, Virginia by Cameron Allen, J.D.,
F.A.S.G." the following quote from page 27-3, "So for the first
time it is known that Abraham Soblet came from Sedan; presumably
his wife Susanne (Brian) was a native of the same town, for it
seems to have been customary in this Register to list the place
of nativity of each parent, if they came from different
localities. It is not without significance to note that the
Soblets were not the only Manakintown settlers to come from
Sedan: by his will Abraham Michaux identifies himself as a
native of the same place, and it is said that Bartholomew
Dupuy's wife also came from Sedan."
"Abraham was given 88 Acres, on the South side of the James
River, being part of the first 5000 acres surveyed for the
French refugees, Henrico Co. Louis Morrill had 66 A. adjoining.
In 1707 Abraham Soblet was elected one of the 12 Vestrymen to
govern the town, and given 133 more Acres."

"The first record of Abraham Soblet is found in the "Registre de
Baptisme" of the Eglise Reforme de Sudan, Reg. #6636, "Bapt.
2/6/1648 ne 4th- Abraham fils de jean Soblet et Judith Lombard."
The last record is in the King William Parish-Powhatan Co., VA
list of tithables for the year 1715- "Abra. Soblet, l'aine". The
intervening 67 years were filled with "toil and trouble"."
"The Church of La Patente de Soho was one of several churches
established in London to minister to the spiritual needs of the
swarm of Huguenots refugees who fled France in terror for their
lives and souls following the revocation of the Edict of
Toleration (Nantes) in 1685. Some of these chirches conformed to
the doctrine of the Church of England, but La Patente de Soho
was a nonconformist chapel, its name deriving from the fact that
its foundation rested upon letters patent issued by the Romanist
King, James II, in 1688. The recent publication of the Register
of this Church contains one Soblet entry:
"(entry #) 225. Soblet. 1698, l mai. Robert, f. d'Abraham, de
Sedan, en France, et de Susanne Brian; bap. par Mr. Malide."
This is the link that connects Abraham Soblet to Sedan. It also
makes clear that Susanne is a Brian. Prior to the publication of
these records she had been variously identified as a Chastin or
a Dupuy in an apparent effort to connect her with other
Manakintown familes. This connection is made by noting that
Thomas Brian is first listed as a tithable in 1710 and Jacques
Brian is first listed in 1725. There were also Brians from Sedan
in London prior to 1698 when Abraham resided there. (Daniel
Brian produced his certificate of communicant status in 1679)."
Abraham Soblet and Susanne Briant (of Sedan, France) immigrated
to Manakintown, Virginia, i n 1700 with other French Huguenots.
Two of their sons, Pierre Louis Soblet and Jacques Soblet, had
many descendants, and their daughter, Anne Soblet, married
Pierre Chastain and also had many descendants.
Today, most Sublett / Sublette families in America are
descendants of Abraham Soblet's sons Pierre Louis and Jacques
Soblet.

THE DOCTRINES AND DISCIPLINE OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH,
SOUTH. _________ Richmond: Published by John Early, for the
Methodist Episcopal Curch, South, 1850.
The first two pages (of 208) take the form of a letter and is
addressed to the members of the Methodist Episcopal Church,
South. The letter gives a brief account of Methodism, both in
Europe and America and the purpose of publishing and
distributing this little book. At the end of the message are
listed the names of five men indicating, I suppose, that they
authored the text on the first two pages.
