Mother: Mary Symantha MACK |
On April 21, 1924, Mac was crushed by a falling log. He was
taken to Baton Rouge General Hospital. Eva was at home with the
children and nursing her invalid mother-in-law when friends
brought her the news, but they failed to tell her how badly he
was injured. It wasn't until the next morning that she received
word that he was in critical condition. She caught the first
train to Baton Rouge but her husband died before she reached
him. Eva was left with five children to raise. The oldest,
Lois, was only eight years old and the youngest, Norman was just
a baby of six weeks.
Eva's father took her and her young children into his home.
Simp Hutchinson was a good provider and wonderful grandfather.
He loved to play checkers and fox and geese - a game similar to
Chinese Checkers using corn instead of checkers. He kept bees
and would put out bait for wild bees. When they flew away from
the bait toward their trees he followed them and with patience
and keen eyesight he would locate their tree. He then cut the
tree down, got the honey and caught the bees. He also had one
of the first trucks in the community and when he had time from
hauling his vegetables to market he often took the kids to
Hammond to window shop and eat ice cream. With the help of her
parents Eva managed to raise her children and send them to
school. There were times of hardship and illness, but what is
most remembered by them were the good times spent walking to
church with friends, fishing on the beautiful Tickfaw River, and
cutting hunks of bacon out of the well-stocked smokehouse for
crawfishing.
The children attendend Holden School and carried their lunches
in syrup buckets which they set on the window ledge during
recess. A man who lived near the school had a lot of hogs.
These hogs learned that the recess bell meant lunch time and
many times the children would look up from their play in time to
see their lunch being engulfed by one of these big white hogs.
Eva lived in the log house her father gave her after he built
his new house until her children were grown. Then, she had a
new house built and, was living there still active, in 1986, at
the age of eighty-seven years. Her granddaughter, Jennie
Pearson, wrote this family history, she recalled the many
wonderful stories and great stock of riddles and jokes Eva used
to tell. She was been a good mother and a wonderful
grandmother.
