Daniel's patent, # 739, was not within the French lands. He
witnessed numerous deed and wills and farmed the glebe land
briefly (Woodlief, Ann, "Martin Family: The Huguenot Emigrant
Generation"). He died intestate, and his estate was inventoried
in full detail, by order of the Goochland Co. Court, 26 Nov
1730. This patent #739 was issued 1732, either posthumously to
his son Daniel II or to his father Henri. The land was sold in
1735 by Daniel II's daughter Francoise shortly before her 25th
birthday. Deed Book 2, p. 70, Cumberland Co. VA.
" The Guerin family settled in Anjou, France between 1520-1550.
Daniel Guerin, his wife, and four children came to VA in 1700 on
the Nassau from Saintogne, St. Nazaire, France, west of Nantes.
His patent (#739) was not within the French lands. He witnessed
numerous deeds and wills and farmed the glebe land briefly."
Saintonge was an old French province located just south of the
city of La Rochelle, itself located in the small province of
Aunis. A town or village named St. Nazaire was located at the
exteme northwest end of the province of Saintonge, on the south
bank and near of the mouth of the Seugne River, and very near
Port des Barques, Soubise and La Rochelle. There is no doubt
whatsoever that this is the town referred to as the home of
Daniel Guerin, and not the town St.Nazaire which is located west
of Nantes, in Bretagne.
Daniel Guérin probably came from St. Nazaire, Saintonge
province, France. Baird, D.D., Charles W., "History of the
Huguenot Emigration to America," Vol. II, pp. 17-18, n. 4
(Regional Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1966); Brock, R. A.,
"Huguenot Emigration to Virginia," p. 32, n. 26.
According to Baird, Mathurin Guerin and François Guerin, natives
of St. Nazaire in Saintonge and sons of Pierre Guerin and Jeanne
Billebaud, settled in South Carolina and are listed in the Liste
des François et Suisses réfugiez en Caroline, etc.
Saintonge (Xaintonge), now in the department of
Charente-Inférieure, was a province on the Atlantic Coast and
the northeast bank of the Gironde River, bounded on the north by
the province of Aunis (La Rochelle), on the south by the
province of Guyenne (Bordeaux), and on the east by the province
of Angoumois (Angoulème). The town of St. Nazaire was located at
the exteme northwest end of the province of Saintonge, on the
south bank and near of the mouth of the Seugne River, and very
near Port des Barques, Soubise and La Rochelle. (It should not
be confused with the town of St. Nazaire, near La Baule and west
of Nantes, in the province of Bretagne. However, what is the
significance of the name of Guerande, a town located just west
of St.Nazaire and north of La Baule, and about 50 miles west of
Nantes?)
Daniel Guerin(1/5/1663 Saintonge, France-1721 VA) and Marie
L'Orange.
Marie was the daughter of Francis L'Orange, granddaughter of
Jean L'Orange, and great-granddaughter of Sir Velas Orange,
according to William Pullin, Guerrant Family of Virginia (at
Virginia Historical Society).

White Slaves: From: [email protected]
Brian, Yes, there were indeed White Slaves. My GrGrGrGrGr
Grandfather, Charles Springer, was a student in London, England,
1619 A.D., when he was knocked in the head, bound hand and foot,
thrown in the hold of a ship, and sent to America, where he was
sold as a slave.
His family, in Switzerland, believed him to be dead, for 5
years. He won his freedom, as ALL slaves did at that time, after
5 years. He went on to be one of the founders of Wilmington,
Deleware. All of this is fact, not conjecture, and with some
study of the Deleware connection, is readily provable.
My point is this; although there were in fact a great deal more
Black slaves than White, the Black folks do not have a lock on
the title of Ex-Slaves. (as if there are ANY ex-slaves alive
today, Black or white)
I can document Native American Slavery, Irish Slavery, Chinese
Slavery, etc. etc.
Slavery was, and is, an Abomination. I would challenge those who
are screaming for Reperations to BUY THE FREEDOM OF THOSE IN
BONDAGE IN AFRICA TODAY. Same Slaves, same Slavers (Arab),
different day.
Rick Myrtue, in Missouri

White Slaves: From: [email protected]
Absolutely, Sir. I, too, am descended from White slaves. My
9th great grandfather, William Durgy, was an Irish soldier
captured in battle against Lord Oliver Cromwell's English troops
and "sentenced" to slavery on a Barbados sugar plantation. He
served 7 years of his "sentence" before being freed by King
Charles II. In fact, the Irish slaves in the Barbados were
treated viciously, much more so than the Negro slaves by
accounts. Another 9th great grandfather, George Darling, was a
Scottish soldier who was also captured in battle against Lord
Oliver Cromwell's English troops and "sentenced" to slavery. He
served 8 years in an iron smelting factory in Massachusetts.
In the spirit of this conversation, I have a request for the
list:
"OTHER" SLAVE DESCENDANTS:
If you have genealogical information that shows you have slave
ancestors who were not Black, please share the info with the
list. I think it would be quite interesting to see how many of
us are being berated about Southern American slavery (of Black
slaves only of course) when we are ourselves descendants of
non-Black American slaves.
