Mother: JOAN 'The Fair Maid of Kent' PLANTAGENET of Wales |
This temporary peace was fortunate, because the late 14th
century was a dark time in Europe -- this was the first outbreak
of the black plague, and it would prove to be the worst of many.
The black plague can be traced along the trade routes. It
originated in the Gobi desert, travelled on the ships going to
Italy, then spread from Italy to most of Europe. During the time
of the plague, one-third of the entire population of Europe
died, and the deaths were concentrated in the cities. Most
cities would suffer a loss of some 60-80% of their population,
and some would disappear entirely. Even had Richard not arranged
a marriage into French lineage, the peace would probably have
happened anyway, as there was no one left to fight in the
battles.
It was during Richard's reign that Wat Tyler became famous for
his large-scale peasant revolt. As his name implies, Wat was a
peasant whose proffesion was laying tiles. He got into an
argument with a tax collector over whether his daughter should
be taxed as an adult, which resulted in the tax collector's
demise and a large group of enraged peasants storming London.
Ultimately the revolt was put down, and Wat Tyler was executed.
The Lords Appellant, led by Thomas, Duke of Gloucester, tried
and convicted five of Richard's advisors of treason. Richard
arrested three of the five Lords and had them executed. One of
the remaining two, who were exiled, was Henry Bolingbroke.
Henry Bolingbroke returned to England in 1399 while Richard was
away in Ireland. Parliament was quick to elect Henry king. When
Richard returned he was arrested and deposed. Richard's
overthrow signified the beginning of the War of the Roses, with
himself as one of the first casualties -- he died in 1400 while
imprisoned at Pontefract castle.
Wat Tyler's peasant revolt failed to overthrow the government,
so they did the next best thing -- they hung all of London's
lawyers.
