Thomas Leftwich was a member of a Colonial Militia Company from
Lunenburg and Bedford Counties in 1758. (Hening's Statutes, Vol.
VIII, pp. 204-06). He was a Lieutenant in a Company of Militia
of Bedford County, VA., in the early part of the Revolutionary
War, later promoted to Captain and his company was assigned to
General Edward Stevens' Regiment, and at the Battle of Camden he
commanded the rear-guard of General Gates' Division. (Vide
Affadavits of his brothers Joel and Augustine Leftwich in Bureau
of Pensions, Washinton, D.C., and for additional records
concerning his Revolutionary services, see under Revolutionary
Solderis herein). Soon after the Revolutionary War he served as
Major, Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, respectively, of the 10th
Regiment of the Virginia Militia.
His will, dated July 15, 1815, was probated in Bedrord County,
June 14, 1816 (W.B. "D,"p.248). He was appointed sheriff of
Bedford County on December 22, 1794 (D.B. 9, p.445), and gave
bond in the sume of $30,000 for the faithful discharge of his
duties. On January 27, 1817 (W.B. "D," p. 297), his personal
property was appraised by Jesse Leftwich, N. Robertson and John
Ward, and valued at $25,000.00. (Reference: See Chapter V of
"Leftwich-Turner Families of Virginia")."
