Research related? to: Henry Hurst, Esq, the Attorney or "Harry,
as he was also known, was a lawyer in Indiana territory. We
find him in Vincennes, and later in Corydon (2nd territorial
capitol, and 1st state capitol). He was a descendant of James
Hurst and Mary Gunnell, that settled near Versailles, Kentucky
(near Lexington). Harry purchased land in Harrison County and
Clark County, Indiana. He apparently rode the "circuit" and
went from county to county following the Judge of the Circuit
Court. I have found references to him in Vincennes, Harrison
and Washington Counties.
He was an Ade de camp to William Henry Harrison during
Tippecanoe Campaign in Indiana Territory. He died in 1855 and
is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County,
KY.
Census of Indiana Territory for 1807. Family Hist. Sect. Ind.
Hist. Soc.1980.pg. 7. List of Free white males of 21 years and
upward.
Knox County
Henry Hurst #287
William H Harrison #309
The Hurst family of Harrison County was also involved in the
courts and early territorial and state capitols. "Sherrif" John
and his son, were to assist bringing the territorial records to
Corydon, when the capitol was moved there. Through out their
travels to Indiana Territory - Wythe Co., VA thru Greene Co., TN
and on to Harrison Co., IN territory, they are shown as
witnesses to wills, also, doing inventories for estates, etc.
So it would be possible for Harry to have a connecton with
another Hurst/Lindsey family line. Many of those on the
frontier had little money, but had skills, and land that they
used to barter for services."
