In 1780-81, enlisted at Marblehead, Mass., on board the sloop
"Thom" of 60 guns and about 140 men, commanded by Capt. Samuel
Tucker. Cruised about a month in the Bay of Chaleur, where their
vessel was captured by the British frigate "Hinds," Captain
Young, commander, and carried first to St. John's Island, then
to Halifax and imprisoned on board a guard ship. He and four
others escaped by swimming half a mile to the shore on a dark
night, where they took a boat and returned home by water,
arriving the latter part of August. Jesse Soule lived in the
place of his birth until nine years of age, when his father
moved to North Yarmouth. He applied for pension Oct. 12, 1832.
His claim was allowed and his certificate issued May 3, 1832.
Residence at time of application, North Yarmouth. He died Jan.
29, 1842, and his widow applied for pension, aged 80 years, and
her claim was granted. He was born on Long Island, in Casco Bay,
June 2, 1759.
Jedediah Soule of Freeport, Me., aged 81 years in 1832,
testified he was brother of Jesse Soule and was knowing to his
service in Captain Baston's Company.
Jonathan Soule of Freeport, Me., aged 75 years in 1832,
testified that he was knowing to his brother Jesse Soule's
service and that a few days after his return he, Jonathan, was
drafted to go to Peekskill, N. Y.
James Soule of Freeport, Me., 78 years of age in 1832, testified
that in 1776 he was a soldier stationed at Fort Independence and
that his brother, Jesse, came there in Captain Wentworth's
Company; and they often saw each other.
