Jane Greene, the first wife of Michael Greene, mariner, was
buried at Stepney on 16 December 1626. The second marriage of
Michael Greene, gent. and Christian Ayres, widow, is recorded,
by a licence granted by the Bishop of London, on 9 March 1626/7
at St. Dunstan, Stepney. The marriage licence says that Michael
Greene was a widower, aged 36, and Christian Ayres was aged 37,
the widow of Jeremy Aires, a citizen and grocer of London,
deceased. The licence was issued on 6 February 1626/7 for the
marriage at Stepney.
Christian Greene, widow, was buried at St. Dunstan, Stepney, on
16 May 1635. A reasonably careful search through the burial
register of St. Dunstan, Stepney between 1627 and 1635 failed to
reveal the burial of Michael Greene. Of course, if he was a
mariner his death could have occurred at sea. There is no will
or administration in the PCC, where probate would normally be
granted for people dying overseas at this time. There is an
Administration for the estate Christian Greene of Stepney
granted in the Commissary Court of London in 1635 [Register 18,
Folio 249], which has yet to be examined. Clearly the burial
registers of Stepney need a detailed examination to firm up many
aspects of the Greene and other families living there during
this period. However the evidence says that Judith Swan had no
close relatives living on her side of the family, if she had to
emigrate to Virginia in 1635.
There is also a Richard Greene recorded at James City, VA in the
1624/5 Census."
