Michael GREENE Gent.

1590 - BEF 1635

ID Number: I58507

  • RESIDENCE: of Stepney Parish, England
  • BIRTH: 1590
  • DEATH: BEF 1635
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1817]
Father: Richard GREENE of Ratcliff
Mother: Margery SHOWELL

Family 1 :
  1.  Judith GREENE

Notes

"Judith Greene had a younger brother, Michael Greene, baptised at St. Dunstan, Stepney, on 21 February 1590/1. He was certainly married by 1611 to Jane ----- . They had quite an extensive family, all baptised at Stepney:
(a) Nicholas Green(e) bapt. 17 November 1611;
(b) Judith Greene bapt. 2 August 1615 [She presumably died young, as she is followed by Judith Greene in 1620];
(c) Charles Greene bapt. 13 October 1616 [Administration of the estate of Charles Greene of Stepney was granted in 1639 in the Commissary Court of London, Register 19, Folio 2v];
(d) Thomas Greene bapt. 17 April 1619 [There are several Administrations of persons called Thomas Greene in the Commissary Court of London, including Thomas Greene of Stepney in 1692, Register 27, Folio 36v];
(e) Judith Greene bapt. 12 January 1620/1;
(f) Michael Greene bapt. 12 June 1622 and an infant child who was buried at Stepney on 1 December 1626. The parish of Stepney was severely afflicted by plague in 1625, with several hundred deaths being recorded in the parish register.

Jane Greene, the first wife of Michael Greene, mariner, was buried at Stepney on 16 December 1626. The second marriage of Michael Greene, gent. and Christian Ayres, widow, is recorded, by a licence granted by the Bishop of London, on 9 March 1626/7 at St. Dunstan, Stepney. The marriage licence says that Michael Greene was a widower, aged 36, and Christian Ayres was aged 37, the widow of Jeremy Aires, a citizen and grocer of London, deceased. The licence was issued on 6 February 1626/7 for the marriage at Stepney.

Christian Greene, widow, was buried at St. Dunstan, Stepney, on 16 May 1635. A reasonably careful search through the burial register of St. Dunstan, Stepney between 1627 and 1635 failed to reveal the burial of Michael Greene. Of course, if he was a mariner his death could have occurred at sea. There is no will or administration in the PCC, where probate would normally be granted for people dying overseas at this time. There is an Administration for the estate Christian Greene of Stepney granted in the Commissary Court of London in 1635 [Register 18, Folio 249], which has yet to be examined. Clearly the burial registers of Stepney need a detailed examination to firm up many aspects of the Greene and other families living there during this period. However the evidence says that Judith Swan had no close relatives living on her side of the family, if she had to emigrate to Virginia in 1635.

There is also a Richard Greene recorded at James City, VA in the 1624/5 Census." [S1817]
