It is certain that he was a man of progressive ideas, and his
name will always be remembered in connection with the
introduction of the first printing press, which he was
instrumental in bringing to Virginia. (See William Crozier's
"The Buckners of Virginia")
Governor William Berkeley, reporting to the commissioners of
Plantations 1671: "But I thank God, there are no free schools
nor printing and I hope we shall not have, these hundred years,
for learning has brought disobedience, and heresy, and sects
into the world, and printing has divulged them, and libels
against the best government, God keep us from both." Within a
little more than a decade later, William Nuthead sponsored by
John Buckner set up in Gloucester County a press (the second to
be established in America) and in 1682 printed two sheets of the
Acts of the Vriginia Assembly. Though Berkeley had been called
to England, a spirit of intolerance toward "liberty of presses"
persisted. In 1682 Buckner was reproved by Governor Culpeper for
printing of the laws of 1680 without a license and, with his
partner William Nuthead, was required to give bond not to do any
further printing 'until his Majesty's pleasure should be known'.
In 1683 King Charles II ordered that no person use any press in
the colony. (Massachusetts had set up a press in 1639 but it was
1704 before any newspaper was regularly published in the
colonies and 1763 before a daily paper appeared regularly) .
In Fredericksburg, Va, 1671 John Buckner, Robert Bryan and
Thomas Royston patented a tract called the Lease-land. In 1722
there was a public ferry across the river from Mr. Fitzhugh's
plantation . . . to the wharf of the leased land of Thomas
Buckner and John Royston. "Virginia, Guide to the Old Dominion",
sponsored by James H. Price, Governor of Virginia. Oxford
University Press, New York. Published 1940, republished 1974.

In the London Register of the Harleian Society is the entry:
"John Buckner of St. Sepulchres; citizen and salter; bachelor
age about 31, married July 10, 1661 to Deborah Ferres of West
Wickham, Buckinghamshire, Spinster about 19; with consent of her
mother, widow, now wife of Andrew Hunt of the same, at West
Wickham." John was a landed proprietor and vestryman of
Petsworth Parish; a member of the House of Burgesses 1683-1692,
and a clerk of Gloucester county. In 1667 he patented 194 acres
in Gloucester County. (History of Ellis - Buckner and Allied
Families in America by Winifred Ellis Suman, Washington, DC.

"John Buckner and Thomas Vicars received a land grant in
Gloucester County dated 19 Feb 1667 for 517 acres, in
Petsoe/Petsworth Parish. John Buckner was one of the head
rights. On that same date, a grant for 194 acres was issued to
John Buckner adjacent to the plantation on which he was living,
adjacent to Mr. Taliaferro. Thomas Vicars was a headright. John
Buckner continued to acquire land in Goucester County. On 22 Sep
1682, John Buckner was granted 500 acres, which he assigned to
his son, Richard. It was part of 4892 acres known as Golden
Valley...."
