  • RESOURCES: See: [S2306] [S2449]
Father: Joseph TANNER II

Notes

"Joseph Tanner III (c1684) was left an orphan when his father died. In 1699 Peter Field was his guardian. Joseph was a magistrate in Henrico County. Tanner paid taxes on three levies and 100 acres in 1736. When they organized Chesterfield County from Henrico County in 1749, Joseph’s lands fell in the new county. In 1756 Chesterfield County listed Joseph Tanner with tithable slaves Hampton, Robin, and Betty.
A Joseph Tanner died in Chesterfield County [3 Oct 1757 / 4 Nov 1757 ] and it was possibly Joseph Tanner III who identified his wife in his will as Jane — . He left his plantation “Coxendale” to his wife while she lived and it would then descend to Floyd Tanner, son of Joel Tanner. “Coxendale” was the original home plantation of Thomas Osborne in what became Chesterfield County.

We do not know how Joseph Tanner came to own it. Perhaps he owned only part of the original plantation or maybe Jane was a descendant of the Osborne’s or Turpin’s. Young Floyd Tanner, heir to an estate, required a guardian and Chesterfield County appointed his father in the April Court 1767."
