Notes

Aka: Earl William I de Ferrieres. There is substantial confusion over his name. See The Complete Peerage V4.p193 for an account. Personally, I feel there could have been two brothers, William and Robert. Robert being the Earl and when he died at Acre his nephew William son of his brother William suceeded, but no documents support this theory either! [S790]

Notes

This entry was made in the diary of Sarah Ann Graves Strickler on August 4, 1861. She is speaking of Asa Graves (1780-1840) son of Thomas Graves who married Sally Kirtley.

"I have been sitting on the porch tonight, listening to Ma tell of our proud, haughty, aristocratick Graves ancestors, with their knee breeches, silk stockings and massive silver buckles. I have a portion of the leg of one of my Grandpa Graves' wedding stockings - his grandmother was a 'Staunton,' daughter of the Scotsman who founded
Staunton, in Augusta County. Ma has often told me of two real African women that
Grandpa had - who had their teeth filed off, and used to frighten them all by running after them - they called Grandma 'my lady'."

Considered one of the aristocrats. He owned several large brandy and whiskey distilleries. Mint julep was his favorite drink. His guests were awakened with a glass of old cream toddy served by slaves. Asa owned more than 2600 acres in the Graves Mill section of Madison Co., VA. Ken Graves says he was born in Woftown, VA and that his house still stands. Wolftown is now in Madison County.

Notes

marriage between Samuel Turbeville and Hannah Palmer who was born abt. 1800, daughter of Archibald Palmer and Hannah Carter.

Hannah Palmer (ca 1800 LA - 6/26/1840 Wilkinson Cty) married Samuel Turbeville. This information is given in the book History of the Descendants of the Jersey Settlers, Adams Cty, MS but without any date. I have not found a marriage date anywhere yet. I did find the marriage documents of their daughter Milly whose guardian was Hannah's sister Sarah Palmer Austin. I think there are other children but haven't found any record yet.
