Children's birth are on record in the Evangelical Lutheran
Parish at Otisheim, Baden, Germany. This information came from
Beyond Germanna # 6.
He moved to Ottisheim in about 1799, where on 11-06-1703, he
married Ursula Ruop, daughter of a local gravedigger.
It is in Ottisheim that they raised their family. A number of
their children
died as infants; Conrad, (who was a twin to Hans Jacob, Mattheus
and probably also Jerg Martin. In the tradition of the times,
they used the Conrad again for their 4th child.
In about 1717, twenty German Protestant families sought to
escape religious
prosecution by the French Catholics. Their German states had
allied with England, Austria and Holland against France in the
War of the Spanish Succession which had ended in 1713. Wars
raged, the people famine, high taxation and injustice from their
rulers.
It is believed that these families hoped to join their
countrymen who had found religious freedom in the colonies
settled by William Penn in the late 1600's.
This must have given our ancestors hope for a better life in the
new land. Their goal was not to be easily attained.
They left the Alsace, Palatinate and Hesse areas of Germany and
made arrangements to sail from England on a ship with Captain
Scott. Before they were able to leave, Captain Scott was
arrested and put in debtor's prison. The passengers waited 6
months for his release. They had to use most of their savings
and provisions that they had planned to use on the voyage. They
ran short of supplies on the voyage and as a result, many did
not survive to reach the new land. They had planned to sail into
Delaware Bay, but wind storms drove them to the coast of
Virginia. Captain Scott refused to release the passengers until
their passage was paid. The immigrants were in a helpless
situation. Governor Spotswood agreed to settle their account in
exchange for their Indentured Servitude for 7 years. Governor
Spotswood of Virginia, settled them at "Germanna" where he had
located an earlier group of German immigrants in 1714. (Germanna
is located where Virginia Route 3 crosses the Rapidan River West
of Fredericksburg, VA). He patented 400 acres on 6-24-1726 in
Spotsylvania County, VA (Virginia Patent Book 12 Page 476)
Johannes proved his importation to America on 05-02-1727, as
John Broyll.
Virginia Will Book A Pages 51, 56 and 62 (Col. Alexander
Spotswood vs Jacob Crigler.) He was granted 50 acres
(Spotsylvania County, VA Court Order Book
1724-1730 Page 142) It was about this time that many of the
German immigrants
moved to present day Madison County, VA, took up land, and
founded the Hebron Lutheran Church.
John's son, Jacob (Hans Jacob) was the progenitor of the Broyles
family and son Conrad was progenitor of the Briles family.
It is believed that Johannes and Ursula had additional children
on this side. They were certainly young enough.
Based on records of land sales, it is certain that Adam
Wilhite's wife, Catherine, was a daughter of Johannes and
Ursula. She would have been born circa 1720.
One probable son, Christley Browel, is mentioned in the 1739
titheable list of Orange County, VA. From this it would be
expected that he was born circa 1718. He must have died or left
the area by 1744, the year Jacob and Conrad sold their part of
their father's farm. Based on the order of tax taking and
comparing it to the carpenter's map of original land patents in
Madison County, (nicely updated in a recent "Beyond Germanna" )
Christley seems to have been living with Mattias Smith, or
nearby.
His will was proved on 2-5-1733. Spotsylvania County, VA Will
