The Early Hurt Family of Virginia
by Oscar H. Hurt

(1) Anson(5) Hurt. His real name was undoubtedly Anderson Hurt (22). He was a first cousin of John[5] Hurt, the Revolutionary War Chaplain, and was named as a beneficiary under the 1801 will of the Chaplain. He was called Anderson Hurt in that will and in several Amelia County order book records. He married Winnefred Dunnavant, daughter of Hodges Dunnavant in Amelia County, Va. by bond dated 5-25-1789. Winnefred died in 1853. I do not know when Anson was born. He died in Amelia County in 1820. (Order Book 31, pages 144-145, Amelia County, Va.) I have identified nine children of Anson and Winnefred Hurt. Eight of them from Order Book 40, page 350, dated 5-28-1840, Amelia County, Va. The nine children are as follows:

(1) John[6] Beckley Hurt, born 6-25-1798 and died 7-7-1868.
(2) William[6] C. Hurt, died in Amelia County about 1833.
(3) Martha[6] P. Hurt, married Allen Wingo.
(4) Nancy[6] J. Hurt, married Thomas M. Cobb.
(5) Elizabeth[6] W. Hurt, married John W. Sadler.
(6) Caroline[6] M. Hurt, married Nathan S. Seay.
(7) Emiline[6] Hurt, married James R. Colby.
(8) Purifee[6] H. Hurt, married Joseph H. Clay.
(9) Samuel[6] A. Hurt, married Mary Alice Nunnally in Amelia County, Va. by bond dated 8-27-1838.
The order of the births of the nine children is not known to me.
