From Hodges Family History, Facts & Speculation - R-Gen 929.2
Hodges, Vol. 2. located in County of Cumberland, Public Library
& Information Center, 300 Maiden Lane, Fayetteville, NC
28301-5000.
"As we stated earlier the first proven ancestor in America on
our branch of the Hodges family is William Hodges in 1753. In
1753 he was in that part of North Carolina that is now Harnett
County. When William first settled in part part of North
Carolina it was then Bladen County. In 1754 it became
Cumberland county and remained so for more than a hundred years.
In 1855 it became Harnett County.
There is one report which states that William Hodges came to
America with two of his brothers and first settled near Harpers
Ferry, Virginia. They were men of large means which means that
they were financially secure, and later William and one of his
brothers moved to the Province of North Carolina with the other
brother remaining at Harpers Ferry. The brother who came to
North Carolina is supposed to have moved to the Eastern part of
the Province.
Phillemon Hodges wrote to his grandson James Phillemon Hodges on
22 May 1839 shortly before his death. Three Hodges brothers
came over from England. One settled in Virginia, one settled in
Eastern NC and one William from whom we are descended settled
near Kittrell Springs.
Phillemon was speaking of his parents William Hodges and
Patience Hawkins. After carefully checking the available
records and finding nothing to contradict what Phillemon wrote
to his grandson James P. I have to assume he is correct. Him
being the son of our first known ancestor it would seem that he
would be in a position to know where his father came from.
However, I do wish that he had named his fathers brothers. Also
he did not tell what year his father and brothers came to
America. Or if he was the first of our ancestors to come to
America.
The other thing or tradition if you will. I have heard all my
life that our family came to America from Scotland. So have
other family members whom I have talked to. they have told me
they thought we were of scotch-Irish Descent. When thinking of
our family origin and taking the above claim into consideration.
Therefore, it is possible and even probable that William Hodges
and his brothers left Scotland and went to England and then came
to America. Something else that we have to consider. Is that
we have been unable to find a record of when William and his
brothers arrived in America. Maybe they were not the first of
our relatives to immigrate here. In Scotland there was a John
Hodges who came to America who was an Armourer in Glasglow. He
came to America in 1685 to New Jersey, and John is certainly a
tradiditonal Hodges family name."
I searched the Harper's Ferry websites and found a Hoge or Hogue
that became prominent, but no Hodges. please write
[email protected] if you have any info.

"I read a very brief excerpt from a family history written by a
Mormon descendant of William Hodges who lives in the same area
today. My interest was piqued by the mention of a Hodges
brother who was supposed to have moved to Harper's Ferry, (VA
now) West Virginia. At the time, I was living 12 miles from
Harper's Ferry and I did quite a lot of research in Jefferson
County at both the Martinsburg Library (county seat) and Charles
Town Library looking for this Hodges. There were Hodges in the
area, in particular, a Mary Hodges
who with her husband, John? had purchased some plots of land in
a speculative venture in Jefferson County. Apparently, they
were related to a whole lot of New Jersey or Pennsylvania Hodges
from the early 1700s who had migrated down the Shenandoah Valley
when the then English Governor (the one that followed Alexander
Spotswood) opened it all up for settlement. That got me started
on another quest which dead ended because I couldn't find any
familiar naming patterns that might warrant the effort of
further investigation. Also, most of those Pennsylvania and New
Jersey Hodges were all Quakers. There definitely were Quaker
Hodges in colonial North and South Carolina, but I don't think
they were ours. Besides, I had already pretty much decided that
the Hodges in North Carolina were related to the Isle of Wight
Hodges, who were either Church of England (Episcopalians) or
Baptists. Our Hodges in Marlboro County settled among the Welch
Neck Baptists who had come from Pennsylvania. That's why I
thought there might have been a connection with the Quakers
originally."
