They bore as arms 'Azure six annulets 3,2,1 Or'. The ancient
family of Veteripont or Vipont carried the arms 'Gules six
annulets 3,2,1,sable'.
The barony of Westmorland was granted to Robert de Veteripont
by King John. A later Vipont, Robert, sided with the barons
against Henry III and was killed at the Battle of Evesham. His
daughter and heiress, Isabella married Roger de Clifford and
established that house in the Barony."
The Bibliography in the back gives as a source, 'Ancient House
of Musgrave', by P.Musgrave, 1911. I think there has also been
something in the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian and
Archaeological Society's Transactions about Musgraves and Eden
Hall.
There is a story attached to Edenhall which I learned at school,
as did all children educated in the counties of Westmorland and
Cumberland, I guess, about the LUCK OF EDENHALL. The Luck was
an exquisite thirteenth-century glass goblet, probably Syrian or
Persian, and brought back to Edenhall by one of the crusader
Musgraves. The story goes that the Luck was rescued by the
butler who found some fairies dancing around it on the lawn.
Furious, they warned the butler that "Whene'er this cup shall
break or fall, Farewell the luck of Eden Hall...". The cup is
now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the hall was
demolished in 1934.
