Notes

"Llywelyn Fawr, Llywelyn ap Iorwerth "the Great", Prince of Wales Acceded: 1194. The Great, Prince of Snowdonia; Prince of North Wales [AC.b. 1240:"obit magnus Achilles secundus, dominus scilicet Lewelinus filius Gervaisi filii Owini Guynet, tunc princeps Walliae, ..."] . [By T, MG. 1, JC.28-29]

Strictly speaking, Llywelyn was "Prince of North Wales" [Gwynedd] only until 1230, after which time he was titled "Prince of Aberffraw and Lord of Snowdon", but the more familiar style is used here. Llywelyn's son Dafydd was actually the first "Prince of Wales".

His ancestry, almost entirely Welsh, however, was descended from the famous Lady Godiva and her husband and so had Anglo-Saxon ancestry. See Frederick Lewis Weis, Ancestral Roots of Sixty Colonists (5th ed. by Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr., F.A.S.G., Baltimore, 1976)(abbreviated AR), line 176. The connection questioned by this source is verified by WG, infra note 16, at Tr. ap C. 1. Llywelyn was also descended from Olaf, King of Dublin, grandson of the famous King of Ireland Brian of the Tributes, and so also had Norse and Irish ancestry. David H. Kelley, F.A.S.G., "The Ancestry of Eve of Leinster", The Genealogist 1:4-27 at 13 (1980); see also AR, line 239."

"The purpose of my article was to show that the commonly ascribed maternity of Llywelyn Fawr's daughters, i.e., that most if not all of his daughters were also daughters of his wife Joan, daughter of King John of England, is unsupported and that the mother of these daughters must be shown as "unknown". Later, in the same periodical, vol. 4, no. 2 (Fall 1983), pp. 137-138, Andrew B. W. MacEwen proved that the daughter Elen who married the Earl of Chester and later Robert de Quincy was a daughter of Joan." from William Addams Reitwiesner [email protected]

Sources disagree on the name of the mother of Gruffydd, some say it is Gwenllian.

"Further information on Llywelyn ap Iorwerth's marriages. Glyn Burgess in his book Two Medieval Outlaws, (published by Brewer 1997) presents the translation of the Medieval Romance of Fouke FitzWaryn. The romance says that Fouke's daughter Eve (by Fouke's second wife Clarice d'Auberville) married Llywelyn after the death of Joan."

Bio: . Llywelyn ap Iorwerth
Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, (Llywelyn Fawr or Llywelyn the Great: 1173-1240) can justly be called the greatest of the medieval Welsh kings. By 1202, he had taken advantage of the quarrels of his uncles and had become ruler of the kingdom of Gwynedd. Further successes in Deheubarth, after the death of the Lord Rhys, and in Powys made him the most powerful of all the Welsh rulers, though it was Gruffudd ap Llwyelyn who is remembered as the only native monarch to rule over all of Wales. In 1205 he married King John of England's daughter, Joan, and helped his father-in-law in a campaign against King William of Scotland. By 1210 the situation had changed dramatically. John invaded Gwynedd, Llywelyn being forced to retreat to the mountainous areas to the West.

When John found himself embroiled in struggles with his Barons and the Pope, Llywelyn was able to reassert his authority in North Wales. In 1216, he presided over a Welsh Parliament at which he was acknowledged as overlord of all other native Welsh rulers, a position confirmed at the Peace of Worcester in 1218, by Henry III. The achievements of Llywelyn were many. Before he died in 1240 as a monk at Aberconwy monastery, he had inspired a revision of the Laws of Hywel Dda. His reorganization of the administrative machinery of Wales, his maintenance of cordial relations with the Pope and the English Church, and the bringing of an era of peace and prosperity to the territories under his control were all testaments to his remarkable diplomatic and military skills. It is no wonder that his achievements on behalf of his people were widely celebrated by Welsh poets.
