1975, No. 1, p.15, Page 30. "Petition of Joseph Tinsley, James
W. Tinsley, Frances Tinsley, and Matilda Tinsley of Newberry
District sheweth that John Williams, the maternal uncle of your
petitioners, being possessed in his own right of two negro
slaves named Minda and Lena, by his Will bequeathed those
negroes to his sister Elizabeth Tinsley, the mother of your
petitioners, and at her death to her children. Since the death
of the said John Williams, there have been born of the negroes
Minna and Lena four children, to wit, Lewis, Charlotte, Dick, &
Abram. The aforesaid negroes are and have been for some time
past in the possession of James Williams, another maternal uncle
of your petitioners, also of Newberry District. Since the death
of John Williams about the year 1800, their mother, the said
Elizabeth, departed this life, on which event your petitioners
became entitled to the possession of those negroes. Petitioners
pray a sale of the negroes.
Petition of Frances Tinsley and Martha Tinsley sheweth that
they, with their brothers Joseph and James W. and their sister
Polly Tinsley, have exhibited their petition for the sale of
certain negroes in which they are jointly interested, but these
petitioners are infants under the age of 21 and over the age of
14 years. They pray that their uncle James Williams, Esqr, be
appointed their guardian."
