From Colonial and Rev. Lineages of America: John Morton
transferred 200 acres in Chickahominy Swamp to William Randolph.
John and Joanne had at least three sons: Joseph, Thomas and
John.
There is a typewritten manuscript in the D.A.R. Library by
Beulah F. Johnson, The Morton Family of Virginia, which does
deal with our line. The lineage of this family is also given in
the Colonial Lineages of America and in Virkus' Compendium.
There are often discrepancies.
Beulah Johnson said that he was in Virginia about 1672. He
married Joanne Hughes, a widow, of Louisa County, in 1682. Mrs.
Johnson believed that Joanne came over with the Randolphs.
Virginia Historical Magazine pg 312-The Morton Patriarchs of
Virginia by Daniel Morton, MD, St Joseph, MO
Will 1721 proved 1722.
Newman A. Hall Letter 16 Mar 1994: There is much speculation
regarding the origin of the Mortin family. The name occurs
earlier in VA, but no clear evidence establishes a parentage of
John Morton. The most extensive discussion of the family is a
typescript manuscript dated 1920 assembled by Dr. Daniel Morton:
The Mortons and Their Kin. This collection in the Library of
Congress is not well assembled, is inconclusive regarding
origins and is inadequate in linking all branches of the family.
The following is an abstract of the will of John Morton of
Sittenbourne Parish, Richmond County, Virginia dated 27 Jul l721
and recorded 2 May l722 who is speculatively identified as the
father of William Morton: "Son Richard, land_ _ _ ; sons James
and Thomas lands and plantation where I now live after the
decease of wife Deborah; if they have no heirs, to Mary and
Winifred Morton; sons William and John; no ex.; wits: John
Davis, Math. Davis. Rich.Co. Will Book 4 p 209".
The children are listed as they are ordered in the will of John
Morton.
Children:
John Morton
Thomas Morton
James Morton
Richard Morton
Mary Morton
Winifred Morton
William Morton b. About. 1686 in Richmond Co, VA
