GENEALOGY
"Among the names inscribed on the roll of Battle Abbey as having
come with William the Conqueror into Britian in 1066 is the name
of the first member of this family that we have record of. In
1193 a member of the family journeyed with Richard III. to the
Holy Land, for his escutcheon is carved on a stone gateway in
the city of Rhodes. A modification of these Arms--Argent, a
heron volant azure, between three escallops sable--is also found
in stained glass in Lincoln Chapel London. The chapel burned in
1856.
The first Herndon in America, of whom we have authentic record,
is William, who patented lands in New Kent County, Virginia, in
Feb. 1674. He married in 1677, Catherine Digges, daughter of
Edward Digges, Colonial Governor of Virginia 1656-1658. Through
this Digges connection the Herndon family is eligible to many of
the Patriotic Societies, among them:
The Society of Daughters of the Barons of Runnemede--ancestor,
Edward Digges.
The Society of Colonial Governors--ancestor, Edward Digges.
The Society of Daughters of the Crown--ancestor, Edward Digges
to Alfred the Great.
The Society of Founders and Patriots--ancestors, Edward Digges.
The Society of Scions and Cavaliers--ancestor, Edward Digges,
son of Sir Dudley Digges.
The Society of The First Families of Virginia--ancestor, Sir
Dudley Digges, father of Edward Digges, whose daughter,
Catherine, married William Herndon.
Reference of the above is found--Virginia Historical Magazine,
Vol. 9, pp. 318, 319; William and Mary Quarterly, Vol. 1, pp.
87, 88, 140, 141; and in Herndon, Hunt and Allied Families, p.
55, by Nesbit and Wood.
Virginia Heraldica
Granted by heads of state, right to possess a family insignia
was once among the most closely guarded rights of Western
society. this is a registry of Virginia families that were
allowed a coat of arms. Each record provides the family name,
county of residence, and detailed notes regarding the heraldic
device. Perhaps more importantly, each record contains helpful
genealogical notes regarding the family, including important
ancestors and from where the family immigrated."
William Herndon (1649-1722) immigrated from England to New Kent
(later King and Queen) County, Virginia during or before 1674,
and married Catherine Digges in 1677. Descendants lived in
Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois and elsewhere. Title A collection
of facts and recollections of the descent lines and the
relationships among some descendants of William Herndon of
England and New Kent Co., Va.; Anthony Halberstadt of Hessen
Kassel, Germany and Hunterdon Co., N.J.; Thomas Faulconer of
