Mother: ELIZABETH (WOODVILLE) WYDEVILLE |
Prince Edward became King Edward V in April 1483 upon the death
of his father. In June 1483 his uncle Richard proclaimed himself
Richard III and the two boys became the famous "Princes in the
Tower". Nothing more was seen of them and it is presumed they
were murdered on the insructions of Richard III, although there
is a school of thought that maintains they were still imprisoned
until after the battle of Bosworth in 1485 when Henry Beaufort
defeated Richard and became Henry VII. It would have been
obnoxious for the new House of Tudor to have two sons of the
House of York still alive.
A book by Josephine Tey, called "Daughter of Time" it is a story
of a modern day policeman bedridden and given the task to choose
an old problem and solve it. He chooses the princes in the Tower
and examines all the details that are known and comes to the
conclusion they were murdered on behalf of Henry VII. I
understand many take this book quite seriously.
Best wishes"

" T. C. Singeltary's letters to Sophie (1861-63) describe the
movements of his regiment (the 44th) in Gen. J. J. Pettigrew's
Brigade. Other letters from these years describe life on the
battlefront as well as the home front."
Series 2. George Badger Singeltary 1818, 1828, 1837-1873, and
undated. Approximately 667 items.
"Chiefly letters to George Badger Singeltary from relatives,
friends, business associates, military commanders, and soldiers.
The majority of the business correspondence concerns legal
matters and the collection of various financial accounts.
Locations of the correspondents are chiefly places in North
Carolina."
"The 1861 correspondence relates chiefly to Singeltary's
military operations near New Bern, North Carolina. Letters
convey routine commands and requests from soldiers to transfer
to Singeltary's company. There is little information about
actual battles; most of the correspondence is administrative.
Notable correspondents include D. H. Hill (folders 59, 61, and
62), and Governor Henry T. Clark (folders 55, 57, and 59)."

[Janelle & Dale Collier] July 30, 1982: "We feel confident that
George Smith and Patsy (Martha) Gentry Smith are the parents of
old Joseph buried in Alabama, but the Smiths around Mt. Hope
never heard of the parents being there other than the three boys
and wives coming in 1845 -- one sister never married and is
buried by one of the brothers to Joseph -- we cannot find her on
any census and she died 1900 -- really a mystery. Our research
in tracing through the census, this George and Patsy left
Tennessee about 1836 and the older sons came in 1845 after
Alexander Smith died in 1842 -- we have the marriage bond of
George and Patsy Gentry Smith -- so many of the Hawkins County
records were burned by the Yanks in the Civil War but luckily
some were saved and since they named one son Gentry, I am sure
this is the right family -- even have their sons living all
around them."
[Janelle & Dale Collier] July 14, 1982. "There are so many
Smiths around Lawrence County that they do not even know each
other or only know they are cousins in some way. We corresponded
with Audrey Smith who is from the George Washington Smith line
(brother to Joseph, born 1816) and she has furnished us a lot of
records from that line. Also some of them are buried at an old
cemetery by a church that is still active. Velma and her sister
were most helpful as they knew where the Smith cemeteries in the
county were."
