JOHN SCRUGGS, son of Drury Scruggs by his wife Mary Carter,
served in the Revolution from North Carolina and participated in
the battle of Guilford Court House under General Nathanlei
Green. He was one of the pioneer settlers of Tennessee, where
his name appears on the records of Anderson County for 200 acres
in 1801, and 50 acres in 1804. He married Millie Menefee,
daughter of George Menefee, by whom he had issue:

this twenty second day of August in the year of our Lord Christ
onethousand seven hundred and eighty five...John Scruggs and
Kezia hiswife of the county of Buckingham of the one part and
Mary Scruggs of the county of Cumberland of the other part...a
certain tract of landlying on Cat Branch in the counties of
Cumberland and Buckingham containing one hundred fifty acres
more or less given to the said John Scruggs by his father Drury
Scruggs by deed recorded in the County of Buckingham and joining
the lines of John Hopson, John Palmer, Robert Brown and George
Keeling...John appears on the tax rolls in 1794. Keziah is shown
as the head of household in 1797.
