TUTT PERIOD - 1815-'31
White roses and peonies bloom in Pilot Grove, Missouri, and
Junction City, Kansas, as a heritage from Jane Gardner Tutt, who
lived in this Dorsey house for seven years, 1818-1825.
In 1795 Henry Trout had sold to John Elsea a 1/2 acre lot in
Front Royal for "16 lbs. current money of Virginia." On
Christmas day 1815, John Elsea sold this lot to Gabriel Tutt of
Frederick County for $500. No house is mentioned in the deed,
but neither is there one noted in the December 17, 1831, deed
whereby Tutt sold the property for $800. to James White, yet it
appears certain that Tutt had been living there after his
marriage in 1818 to Jane C. Gardner. Thus we cannot determine
whether the house was built by Elsea or Tutt, but do know that
the original log part of two rooms over two with center hall and
stairs dates prior to 1818 and could be as old as the late
1790's.
Dr. Gabriel Tutt was one of the most extraordinary men
associated with Chester Street, and we are fortunate to have as
a source of information "The Tutt Family of Virginia" compiled
by Augusta B. Fothergill, tracing them from Richard Tutt, who
came to Virginia in 1700 and settled in Richmond County, down to
our Gabriel Tutt who was the son of John Tutt, the Captain of a
company of Spotsylvania County militia in the Revolution. In
1770, Capt. Tutt (1745-1812) married his sescond cousin, Mary
Tutt (1754-1807), and they were the parents of seven children,
including Gabriel.
Dr. Tutt was born in Virginia November 13, 1787, and married
first in 1812 Mildred Menefee, who died a few years later. He
must have been living in Front Royal in 1812, when he was
appointed Postmaster, serving until 1815. He was elected
secretary when the town Trustees met on May 15, 1815, to lay off
the town lots and streets - a commission long delayed by
"clashing interests and dissention" that had developed among the
original land owers in the years since the town was chartered in
1788.
In 1818, Dr. Tutt married Jane Chunn Gardner (1798-1879),
daughter of Samuel Gardner of "Greenfield Farm," Warren County,
Virginia. Two of our most historic Warren County homes are
Gardner family estates: "Ellerslie," no longer standing, and
"Mountain Home," built in 1842 by Jane Tutt's brother, Samuel B.
Gardner, an affluent farmer and grazier.
Gabriel and Jane Tutt had twelve children, some of whom were
born in their Chester Street home before they moved to Luray,
Virginia where it is known that one daughter, Frances Vriginia,
was born on Christmas day, 1825. They had moved to Culpeper
County, Virginia by December 17, 1831, when they sold their
Chester Street property to James White.
In 1834 the Tutts moved to Cooper County, Missouri, near the
present town of Bunceton, where Dr. Tutt bought a 1400-acre
plantation which he cultivated with slave labor. He was active
in community affairs and was influential as a member of the
committee that located the University of Missouri at Columbia in
1839. He died in 1853 and is buried in the Old Concord Cemetery
3 miles NE. of Bunceston. His will directed that the plantation
be sold and the sale bill, which was circulated as far as
Lexington, Kentucky, described it as 1,400 acres "well improved,
the late residence of Dr. Gabriel Tutt, 12 miles southwest of
Booneville in Cooper County . . . composed of the best Missouri
lands, prairie and timber, and in a high state of cultivation,
admirably adapted for stock raising." Jane survived her husband
by 26 years and is buried beside him in Concord Cemetery. Nearby
stood Old Vine Baptist Church where the family attended
services.
When they left for Missouri Jane had taken a white peony and a
white rose from her Virginia home. They survived the six-weeks
journey by covered wagon and flourished in her Missouri garden.
In 1847, her daughter, Frances Virginia Tutt, married Judge John
M. McCutchen of Cooper County and brought starts from the two
plants to her own garden near Pilot Grove. In 1916 her daughter
married Mr. Todd and carried roots to her new home at Nevada,
Missouri. In 1957, her son, Thomas M. Todd, took starts to his
home at Junction City, Kansas, where the rose died but the peony
blooms every year - such an uncommon single white variety with a
yellow crown in the center, that a botanist from the University
of Missouri, who saw it in 1890, named it the "Madam McCutchen"
in honor of Frances Tutt McCutchen. Jane Gardner Tutt's silver
cord with Chester Street will never be loosed as long as the
"Madam McCutchen" blooms in Kansas!
