"Quote from Pat Hansen email: "I was able to contact Mildred Settle Ludy, who happens to be the great-granddaughter of Josiah Settle and 2nd wife Nancy. She has traveled from North Carolina to Mississippi to Ohio to confirm the strangeness of Josiah's past and has confirmed that Nancy was a black former slave of his whom he began a relationship with sometime after first wife Frances' death and continued after several children and later marriage in 1858."


Josiah's will: To Nancy and her children, Sidney, Pikney, W. H. Harrison, Henry Clay, Winfield Scott, Cornelia, Josiah, Josephine, hi former Slaves, the property which he had before the making of said Will given them in the State of Ohio.


Nancy married James Adkins Birth: Abt 1837 Death: 14 Feb 1897 in Eldorado, Butler, Ohio on December 23, 1883, Richmond, Wayne Co., Indiana,. they moved to Eldorado after their marriage where Nancy purchased a home on lot #43 in the Village of Eldorado in Preble Co., Ohio, Married: 23 Dec 1883 in Richmond,Wayne, IN.

"Benjamin Haile was a Captain in the American Revolution War from 1789 to 1782. He served in General Marshal's South Carolina Militia. I have his war records. Captain Haile was also a senator in South Carolina, he died 1794. Benjamin was a doctor by trade."


"His father gave him last of his land, he moved to Lancaster Co. SC bef 1785 when he was named exec of will of Jonas Griffin. His uncle, Joseph Gatewood, who was an attorney, settled in his behalf, disposing of land left by his father in 1789 Essex Co. VA.


He was a tax collector at least for years 1785 untiul his death. After he died, there was some contention in the courts as to whether or not he turned in all monies collected for years 1785 & 1786. He had a large amount of land as evidenced by the sales of tracts of up to 400 acres."

"The Sandridge-Hutchison connection can be traced back at least to Franklin County, TN, as both families are shown there (just three pages apart) on the 1830 census.
