Notes

In 1841 his father deeded him 500 acres on Big Muddy Creek where he established a plantation called "Edgewood". In 1847 a red brick church Methodist church was built and named Taylor's Chapel.

"The impact of this devout Christian gentleman was felt throughout the area. Frequent requests brought him to the bedside of a relative or servant to lend aid to the ill. He spoke at religious meetings and was a leader in community affairs. He made several trips to Virginiua on business for his father, grandfather and uncles. He was an avid reader, with interests ranging from agricultural methods and medical treatment for man and beast to religious history and weekly newspapers. He attended political rallies, often riding for hours to cast his ballot. His generosity was shown in support of the Somerville Female Institute which his daughter, Lois attended, the Somerville Male Academy attended by his son, Edmund, Trenton Female Academy, Dancyville Male Academy, missionary causes and his own and other churches.

Howell Taylor's love for this country never wavered through the terrible conflict of the Civil War with all the hardships and suffering endured by all citizens. Economic disaster was rampant in west TN during Reconstruction but he held his family and homeplace together as he adjusted to a new way of life. The land is still in the possession of his descendants who treasure the memory of this stalwart man". Submitted by Sarah Alexander Cooley Cottle. [S488]
