Mother: FERGUSA (URGUSIA) of the Picts |
Alpin of Kintyre King of Dalriada Scotts, died 841 Galloway,
killed fighting Picts? Reigned 834-837.
"In 740, Alpin (son of Eachaidh by a Pictish mother), who had
been successively king of the Northern Picts (726) and king of
the Scots (729) and who later was driven out of those kingdoms
by Angus, entered Galloway (Ayrshire) with an army and laid its
territory waste. In 741 he was defeated by Innrechtach near the
Dee,21 and obliged to retreat to Loch Ryan, where he was
assassinated22
30. Alpin, king of the Scots of Dalriada (not to be confused
with him who perished
in Glenapp in 740, had been expelled from his kingdom by the
Northern Picts. His son Kenneth (in Gaelic, Cinaedh), afterwards
renowned as Kenneth MacAlpin, had taken refuge in Galloway. By
the help of his relatives there, and the co-operation of the
Norsemen, he [p.262]was able to regain his kingdom of Dalriada
and afterwards defeat the Northern Picts in the epoch-making
battle of Fortrenn. . .
21. 741, battle of Drum Cathmail between the Cruithnigh and the
Dalriads against Innrechtach.--Annals of Ulster.
22. While riding through a ford in Glenapp he was killed by a
man hidden in a wood, and his burial-place is marked to this day
by a large stone called Laicht Alpin, Alpin's Grave, which gives
the name to the farm of Laicht on which it stands.--Maxwell,
History of Dumfries and Galloway, p. 37.
He crossed from Kintyre to Ayr, and then moved southwards. A
great deal of misconception has accompanied his movements.
Wyntoun has been implicitly believed, who wrote his Chronicle
about 700 years after the event, and has not been considered
altogether trustworthy in regard to other matters. And he has
rendered it--
"He wan of werre all Galloway,
There wes he slayne, and dede away."
The story of the devastation of the district rests on these
lines. There is no doubt that he never overran Wigtonshire, nor
was even in it. He was only on the borders of present Galloway,
and there was slain, not in battle, as is generally supposed,
but by an assassin who lay in wait for him at the place, near
Loch Ryan, where the small burn separates Ayrshire from
Wigtonshire. An upright pillar stone marks the spot, and was
called Laicht Alpln, which in the Scoto-Irish means the stone or
grave of Alpin.--Galloway, Ancient and Modern, p. 65. 23. Bede,
continuation of Chronicle, Anno 750." "As the death of Alpin
occurred in 741, near Dalmellington, on the north banks of the
Doon, it may be inferred that Ayrshire was then an integral part
of Galloway. Yet, though this was the case, it is well known
that there were no sheriffs under the purely Celtic rule of the
country, which prevailed until the eleventh century; and from
charters of David I. it is evident that in his reign, if not
previously, the boundaries of Galloway had been greatly
limited.--Paterson, History of the County of Ayr, p. 1."
"House of Alpin: Kings of Scotland were elected from the
reigning King's relations, so sucession passed from one branch
to another."

"Bernard Lindsay, is descended maternally from Sir. Jerome
Lindsay (Lord Lyon & Lindsays of the Mount) and proven
paternally from the Snowdon Herald, Thomas Lindsay of Kingswark,
Leith. It has not been proven, but the belief of Donald Whyte
(professional genealogist of Scotland) is that Thomas Lindsay of
Kingswark was descended from the Lindsays of the Mount. The
Lindsays of the Mount were a cadet branch of the Lindsays of the
Byres. The Byres barony was created with Sir John Lindsay
becoming the first Lord Lindsay of the Byres in about 1444. Sir
John Lindsay's grandfather was David Lindsay, Lord of Crawford
who married Maria Abernethy in 1325.
If all this is true, it would make Bernard Lindsay's
Y-chromosome surely as noble as that of the Rev. David Lindsay.
In fact, if it were not for mutations, we could expect their
Y-chromosome DNA to be identical."
Although Mr Whyte may have believed that Bernard's ancestor
Thomas of Kinswark was descended from the Linds*ys of the Mount,
there's a wide difference between "belief" and "proof", even for
eminent genealogists like Mr Whyte. Bernard's exact lineage is
uncertain. It is said that Mr Whyte based his conjecture in
this matter largely upon heraldic evidence which, while
suggestive, is far from definitive.
