The earliest records in Franklin county, Mississippi show that
this family spelled the name "Hickingbottom" - using the letter
"G". To this day a majority of the Hickingbottom descendants of
this family still use this spelling, which was never a matter of
some county clerk making an error, or because of a lack of
education. While the spelling is unique, there was at least one
other family who spelled it the very same way. One WILLIAM
HICKINBOTTOM died in Lauderdale county, Alabama in 1818, where
the probate records show the name spelled with a "G" in numerous
places. This William had a son named "William Hickingbottom"
who disposed of much of the estate, and in November 1824 he sold
slaves to one William Graham of JEFFERSON COUNTY. MISSISSIPPI.
This is significant because JEFFERSON COUNTY is not only many
miles to the south, it is adjacent to FRANKLIN COUNTY, which is
known to be the residence of some of Aaron Hickingbottom's
family.
Aaron Hickingbottom of Franklin county, Mississippi was probably
the son of William Hickinbottom, the Revolutionary Soldier from
Montgomery county, Virginia. It appears that it was William's
family who moved to Washington county, Virginia in the 1790s and
settled on the Holston River. Several members of that family
married in Washington county, one of them being Elijah
Hickinbottom who married Polly Goff and moved to Rutherford
county, Tennessee. It also appears that the younger Aaron
Hickinbottom who settled in Bledsoe county, Tennessee and Gideon
Hickinbottom who later moved to Clay county, Illinois, was also
a descendant from this family - and believed to be the sons of
Moses and Elizabeth (Faries) Hickinbottom.
There are a number of reasons that I reject the theory that
Aaron Hickingbottom of Franklin county, Mississippi was the son
of Caleb and Mary Ann (Cash) HIGGINBOTHAM. Therefore, I offer
the above information merely as an alternate theory, which I
believe will lead future research in the right direction. It is
often constructive to speculate about our family history during
the research process - but a great waste of time when we fail to
make a clear distinction between fact and conjecture. Hope
this information helps in the research............Earl
Higginbotham
