Recent Y-Chromosome DNA tests taken by direct male descendants
of Jesse Lindsey, a known son of Mary Barkdale Lindsey Hurst,
and of Henry Lindsey Sr., an almost certainly known son of
William Lindsey, proved to be a near-perfect match. However, the
descendant of Jesse had an exact match with a line of Lindsays
from North Carolina, so the results proved a relationship, but
not what the relationship was.
The three Lindsey sisters who m. Hursts were children of Jesse
Lindsey and Catherine Kelly. Jesse was a son of Henry Lindsey
Sr. and Elizabeth Smith of Carroll County. Henry's father was
probably William Lindsey.

STUDENT SOLDIERS FORM UNIVERSITY
Roll of the University Volunteers as they went into service of
Confederacy.
THERE WERE MANY OTHERS Numbers of the Brave Student Soldiers
Have Long Since Passed Over. (Prepared by Captain G. Julian
Pratt)
The following is the roll call of the "University Volunteers" ,
a company of students organized at the University of Virginia
late in the session of 1860-61. They were prepared for service
during the closing months of that session. Mustered into the
service of the Confederate States about July 1, 1861 they
reported to General Henry A. Wise, then at Charleston, Kanawha
County, organizing his command which was known as the "Wise
Legion." Judege W. W. Old, of Norfolk, and Captain G. Julian
Pratt, of Waynesboro, VA whose names appear have been
instrumental in the restoration of this record.
During that session, three companies were organized at the
University. The Sons of Liberty, Captain James Tosh, of
Petersburg, VA and the Southern Guard, Captain Ed. Hutter, of
Lynchburg, VA took part in what is known as the Harper's Ferry
ampaign, in 1861, as State troops. The University Volunteers
wre regularly mustered into the Confederate service and served
under General Wise, throughout the campaign in West Virginia.
By order of the Secretary of the War in 1862, they were
disbanded.
A very interesting and valuable memorial of this company has
been prepared by Judge W. W. Old, of Norfolk, VA part of which
was then prublished in the University Bulletin before its
suspension but the roll on the company has never before been
published.
