One more incident I found in one of the old ledgers was the use
of pow wowing, which was a form of folk medicine that
Pennsylvania Germans practiced. In most cases, old women did it.
For example, if a baby had an upset stomach and her mother took
her to a powwower, the powwower would take the crying baby
behind a closed door, mumble a lot of Pennsylvania Dutch words
while doing a hands-on rubbing in gestures known to her, and
eventually when the two came out, the baby was no longer crying
and didn't have a colic, gas, or whatever, in her stomach after
that.
One day Andrew Sadowski fell back on this art of healing. On May
6, 1751, he paid Granny DeHart, who apparently lived in the
vicinity, for curing his servant's hand. The Negro was called
Guinea. By passing on this spectrum of healing from mother to
daughter, powwowing is still practiced in Pennsylvania and De
Hart families still live in the area where Granny De Hart did in
1751.
Whatever may turn up in the future, April 18, 1752, was the last
day that I found Andrew Sadowski in Amity Township, now part of
Berks County, but in the first half of the 18th century in
Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. For most of that time the
patriarch of the family, his children and the children's
children were better known as Sadowski than any other variant.
After moving to Virginia, the name was written Seduskie,
Sowdowsky, Sandusky, and other variants. No sooner had the
family reached Augusta County, Virginia, than Andrew Sadowski
rode to a ornate courthouse in Staunton, in the Shenandoah
Valley, and filed suit against Cornelius Ruddle for a debt of
nine pounds. The date was November 21, 1752, and his name was
spelled Soduski in the court records. In other words, the
Sadowski family changed residences between April 18, 1752, and
November 21, 1752, but it didn't change the birthplaces of most
of the children. Again, please remember that Emanuel, John,
Samuel, Anthony, and James Sadowski were born in Pennsylvania."
Children of Andrew Sadowski and Catherine Innskeep are:
i. Emmanuel4 Sadowski, born Bet. 1740 - 1745 in Amity Township,
Pennsylvania; died Abt. 1790 in Giles County, Tennesee.
ii. Samuel Sadowski, born Abt. 1746 in Amity Township,
Pennsylvania; died December 1803 in Jessamine County, Kentucky.
iii. Anthony Sadowski, born Abt. 1747 in Mooresville, Hardy
County, Virginia; died 1810 in Washington County, Kentucky.
iv. James Sadowski, born 1748 in Douglasville, Berks County,
Pennsylvania; died 1819 in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
v. Jacob Sadowski, born Abt. 1754 in Moorefield, Hardy County,
Virginia; died May 19, 1832 in Jessamine County, Kentucky.
vi. Jonathan Sadowski, born Abt. 1756; died 1782 in POW
Revolutionary War.
vii. Hannah Sadowski, born Abt. 1763 in Hardy County, Virginia;
died Aft. 1860 in Greene County, Kentucky.
