m. 24th August, 1754, in Cumberland County, Obedience TURPIN, b. in Goochland County, Virginia, dau. of Thomas TURPIN d. 1790, and Mary JEFFERSON, who was the aunt of President Thomas JEFFERSON.


John CRITTENDEN was Major of the Virginia State Line and Lieutenant in the Virginia Continental Army in the War of the Revolution; Member of the Committee of West Fincastle to the Convention of Virginia, 20th June, 1776; representative from Fayette County in the Virginia House of Burgesses, 1783-1784; Original Member of the Cincinnati;


his son Robert CRITTENDEN was Governor of Arkansas;
his son Thomas T. CRITTENDEN was Secretary of State for Kentucky and a distinguished Judge;
his son Henry CRITTENDEN was the father of Thomas T. CRITTENDEN, Governor of Missouri and of William Logan CRITTENDEN, Captain United States Army, shot by Spaniards in Cuba in 1851.
