of horse in 1743, but died the following year, leaving
personalityto the then considerable value of $811.48. His

Goshen. His wife was Jean McFarland, and his children were

per Albert Boggess (AB): "Sent to Virginia in 1750 by Church of
England as Episcopal minister;
1751-73 in charge St. James Southam Parish, Episcopal Church in
Peterville; died 1773. Robert and Elizabeth (Blaikley) McLaurine
are buried beneath the chancel of the old church at
Peterville....
Rev. William Douglas, minister of St. James Northam Parish,
preached the funeral sermon of Robert McLaurine. Rev. Douglas's
parish was on the north side of the James river and Robert's was
on the south side of the river." (In the surrounding passages,
Cousin Albert cites a number of books and other references
concerning this period in this place; they contain many familiar
names and interesting notes.PZ)
per AB: Robert and Elizabeth had seven children, all born in the
Glebe.
They had a family Bible which passed into the hands of James
McLaurine.
It passed from James to his son, Robert, and from Robert to one
of his daughters who moved to Missouri with her family, and that
was the last heard of the Bible. However, a copy of the birth
and early death entries
had been made. the births are as listed on the family card; the
deaths
as as follows:
Robert McLaurine died 7-5-1773
Catharine McLaurine died 9-8-1775
Agnes McLaurine Steger died 2-1-1782
Elizabeth McLaurine died 8-7-1803
Sarah Catherine Shivers Lattimore writing in 1916 offers
interesting material:(PZ:She mentions "Sister", referring to
Nannie Elizabeth Shivers Boggess (my great aunt "Auntie").) She
quotes Scottish American Journal, Oct. 1868,as follows in part:
"The clan McLaren, sometimes called McLaurin, occupied a narrow
strip of country extending from Locharnhead till they bordered
on the McGregors of Glengyle....Rev. John McLaurin, Minister of
Glendarnel, and author of a Gaelic version of The Psalms, had a
son, Colin McLaurin, born in 1698, educated by the Rev. Daniel
McLaurin, Minister of Kilfinnan who became Professor of
Mathematics in Edinburgh. John MacLaren, Lord Dreghorn, was "an
eminent Senator of the College of Justice" "Archibald MacLaren,
born in the Highlands in 1755 was a prolific dramatic writer of
some merit". He "served in the American War under General Howe
and Clinton as a private soldier". The "list of his works, over
one hundred in number, published in 1835, evinced his industry
and care." On Sister's return from Europe in 1913 she brought
the following which she had copied:
"Balquidder -- The Clan Laurin"
Within the last few days a handsome monument from the granite
works of Messrs. McDonald, Field & Co. of Aberdeen, has been
erected in the church yard of Balquidder bearing the inscription
'In memories of the Clan Laurin, anciently the allodian
inhabitants of Balquidder and Strathcairn; the chief of whom in
the decrepitude of old age, together with his aged and infirm
adherents, their wives and children, the widows of their
departed kindred - all were destroyed in the silent mid-night
hour, by fire and sword by the hands of banditti of
incendiarists from Clendeehart, A,D. 1558'."
Erected by Daniel McLaurin Esq. of St. John's Wood, London,
author of a short history of his own Clan, and for the use of
his own clansmen only". (From Scottish American Journal, Oct.
1868)
"Sister visited Balquidder on her visit to Scotland, found in
the graveyard graves of McLaurines, brought with her specimens
of cloth and neckties of McLaurine plaid."
