Obit. in "Pendleton Messinger" issue of 8/11/1830, "Rev Henry
Gaines died 25th ult. in his 94th year of age. He was born in
King and Queen Co., Va, came to S.C. at the age of 60,resided in
Newberry District,then Abbeville Dist. and for twenty years
resided in this neighborhood (near Central, S.C.). He was for
fifty years a Methodist Minister. He married three times. His
first wife was the mother of his thirteen children. She lived to
see all of them grown. He maried his last two wives in his old
age and outlived both of them. My line is through his son Edmund
who married Susanna Broaddus. I live in this area and have
visited and made pictures Ann's grave located in Abbeville Co.,
S.C. Please don't think I'm saying your information is wrong . I
just think and I hope you do too that we need all the help and
information we can get to be sure that our information is

The children are probably not all one wife's.
Rev. Henry Gaines, born Abt. 1731 in Kings & Queen Co. Virginia;
died August 11, 1830 in Pickens Co. South Carolina - 12 Mi.
Cmty. near Central, SC31. He was the son of James Gaines Sr.
and Mary Pendleton. He married Ann George June 5, 1756 in
Virginia . Ann George born March 18, 1735 in Middelsex Co. Va.
(Caroline Co. Va.) died 1801 in Abbeville Dist. S.C.(Gaines
Chapel Grave Yd). She was the daughter of Richard George and
Elizabeth Ann Mayo.
Notes for Rev. Henry Gaines: He was a minister of the Methodist
Episcopal Church who came from Virginia to Newberry County,
South Carolina, then went to Abbeville County then to Pickens
County.

Louie Keys (great-grandson of Robt. A. Thompson) reported that
Henry was age 93 at his death. 1830, 12 Mile Cemetary, vic
Central, SC.

"A Compilation, Gaines Family Data", not indexed, found in J.
Eric Jonson Public Library, Dallas, TX. His obituary is
recorded in "Pendleton Messenger", Aug. 11, 1830. In 1777, the
Rev. Henry Gaines bought 206 ac. from his father, James Gaines,
on Robinson Riv.; and 115 ac. from John Waugh. He and his wife
purchased other land, and sold it in Dec. 1787. In 1788, he was
in Caroline Co., VA.
"Henry Gaines, of Pickens County, S. C., in his will (1830)
leaves to his daughter, Nancy Dogan, "200 dollars with a
deduction of 93 dollars which she received and receipted to my
son, Reuben Gaines, being my legacy of my mother's estate." (FTM
CD #187, p. 177fn)."
A GAINES book, published by Calvin E. Sutherd, Ft. Lauderdale,
Florida, 1969 (Indexed and revised, 1972), states that Henry
married 1st, Isabella Pedick? and 2nd, Sarah George. It also
says that Henry was the son of a William Gaines. Copy at SAR
library in Louisville.
