...the exact date of his coming, or by what ship, from what
port, is not known...on April 2d, 1684...a :Certificate ...for
the importation of the following persons into the colony"; one
of the persons being John2 Battile...within a few weeks after
the date...John1 Battile is sworn in as "Under Sheriff for the
South side of the Rappahannoc."...and by June 1st, 1687 had
"lately married Catherine, one of the daughters of Mr. Robert
Taliaferro, Dec;d."..1692 he was in command of a Company of
Rangers against the Indians...1692...member of the House of
Burgesses from Essex...Catherine...lived but a short time after
their marriage, and died without issue...1695, as Capt. John1
Battaile he received a certificate for six hundred acres of land
for the importation of twelve persons; in the year 1707, Thomas
Merriweather sold to John1 Battaile 1631 acres "in the freshes
of the Rappahannock, commonly known as Solomon's Garden,"...Jan.
20th, 1707-8, John1 Battile wrote and signed his Will, and in
less than a month it was offered for probate...
"...there are references to Col. John1 Battaile in early records
too numerous to be cited at this time, but we may select one of
special interest: 'Fryday, May 3, 1694; Mr. Speaker informed the
house that he had received from his Excellency 2 letters, viz;
one from Mr. Taliaferro, Lieutenant of Rangers at the head of
the Rappahannock river, and one from Captain Battaile in the
upper parts of said river giving an account of the Mischief
lately done by Indians in order to communicate them to the House
&c.' (Journal, H. B.)."
information on the WFT disks is somewhat in error.
I am married to William Battaile (Pronounced "Battle". I will
now also correctly pronounce Taliaferro as "Tolliver".)
William descends from Lawrence Battaile and Ann Hay Taliaferro.
Ann's parents were Francis Whitaker Taliaferro (Francis6,
Lawrence5, John4, Robert3, Francis2, Bartholomew1) and Jane
Taliaferro.
I believe Jane's ancestry is (Robert6, John of the Mount5,
Francis4, Robert3, Francis2, Bartholomew1.) I have seen the
Battaile family bible, and foolishly failed to copy the detailed
family records.

In 1780 Joseph explored the Clinch River Valley with his friend
Edward Kelley. Finding the area rich in forest, game, fresh
water, fish, lumber, etc., they returned home enthusiastic about
the area.
On 10 October 1782 the Commonwealth of Virginia granted fifty
acres of land on the south sid e of the Clinch River to Joseph
Keyser. This land was in the part of Washington County, VA that
became Russell County. Joseph's land adjoined the property of
his friend Edward Kelley.
The area where Joseph Keyser and Edward Kelley settled was know
as "Keysers Station". The na me was later changed to Carbo. They
are believed to be the first settlers in this area of the Clinch
River.
All the Kisers in Russell and Dickenson County are believed to
be descendants of Joseph and S usannah Keyser. They spell their
name Kiser.
