Mother: Lucy Burbage ARMISTEAD |
In March 1976, Frankie Harris Lawson (Mrs. James Leonard Lawson)
prepared an account of the Waller family as she knew it. While
the majority of her information has been found to be correct,
there are some errors. The following narrative begins her
account.
"Benjamin Leonard Waller was born 1811, the only son of a family
of four. He married Dorothy Wilson, a Virginia girl. Benjamin
Leonard came into Todd County at the age of 21 years of age with
his wife and baby girl, Liza, from Louisa County, Virginia. This
was before Trenton, Ky. was a town. He was a school teacher and
taught in Todd County, was a farmer, stock dealer, merchant in
Trenton and helped lay off the little town, and put up rental
property. Built a hotel on a lot now occupied by Planters Bank
of Trenton, Glascocks store and Mabel Joiners home. Ran the
hotel a number of years before moving on his seven hundred acre
farm on Spring Creek. Highway 41 split it and now known as the
Moss farm (Herbert Dye now lives on Place), running down in
front of where Lewis Sadler now lives, to the old Lester Lane
and back to where Paul Sanders now lives, and on the other side
of Highway 41 from the creek to where Tommy Vinson now owns. He
was fifty-six years old when he passed away in in 1867, three
years after the Civil War. He owned 80 slaves at the time they
were set free. A son-in-law Washington Merritt and two sons
George and Benjamin went through the Civil War. Not certain of
religion but believe he was of a Baptist background and his wife
and family went with Alexander Campbell, Preacher, who split the
West Fork Baptist church, and formed the Christian Church,
(called Corinth), and later moved the church into Trenton on the
same lot it now occupies. Dorothy remained a widow for 31 years,
died on home place (Moss Place) buried there 1898. Benjamin was
also buried on home place. When Dorothy died she left six living
children--Ben, Lucy, Nannie, Zach, Sallie, and Cora."
