Elias was orphaned at 13. He studied for the ministry, but financial distress caused him to seek his fortune in Antigua, where his uncle John had an extensive plantation. He was in business there as a merchant about ten years, and married there, first to Susanna La Roux, and four years later to Katherine Williams. He prospered, and returned about 1736 to Philadelphia. His business grew with the city, and he retired to an estate at Elizabeth, NJ.

Apprenticed 7 years to silversmith Simeon Soumaine. A silversmith by trade, his manufactures are rare and still valued, noted by the hallmark EB. His father wished him to join the ministry, but as a young man he went instead to Antigua , where his elder half-brother Pierre had a ?? Line 4182: (New PAF RIN=516)

Old Churches, Ministers, and Families of Virginia.Article LXIII
"The very best of the old ministers of Virginia were from this stock. Moncure, Latane, the two Fontaines, the two Maurys, and others who might be mentioned, were among them. To these, I am told, may be added one of recent date,--the pious William Duvall, of Richmond. If we extend our view, and look to the patriots and statesmen of the Revolution, where shall we find better men than Chief-Justice Jay, of New York, Elias Boudinot, of New Jersey, the Bayards, Legare, the Laurenses, the Grimkys, Marion, Neuvilles, Gervais, Rutledge?"
