Notes

"Elisha Lawrence father of Joseph, Benjamin, John, & Joab. We know Benjamin was born in Va in 1747 and by late 1750's the family was living in that part of SC that became Abbeville District SC from land grants received. After the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Lawrence appears in what was to become Pendleton District SC in 1790 Census with 2 males over 16, believe one of these was Joab.

Joab appears to have married by 1800 Census as additional older female in the family who probably died by 1803 when he wrote his Will that was proven in 1813, that named his brother Benjamin, and Joab son of his brother John.

Owned a mill in 1763 in SC. Rec'd a land grant in 1759 in 96 District (Abbeville) SC. "

John TAYLOR

1 Dec 1611 - 1658

ID Number: I14794

  • OCCUPATION: Coat of Arms
  • RESIDENCE: Carlisle, Chester Co. England
  • BIRTH: 1 Dec 1611, Carlisle, Northumberland, England [S122]
  • DEATH: 1658
  • RESOURCES: See: CONFLICT NOTES POSS. FATHER OF OUR JAMES [S408] [S471]
Father: Matthew TAYLOR

Family 1 : Elizabeth HORTON
  1. +James I TAYLOR

Notes

CONFLICT: Quote from "Notable Southern Families" "In 1635, a young man, said to have been the son of John Taylor (d 1658) is reported to have arrived in VA from Carlisle in Chester Co. ENG, the friend of the family that proved so prominent a part in the Old Dominion".

This would have likely been Dr. James Taylor, James I's Uncle. I know of no mention of our James in VA prior to 1650. Most sources have him emigrating to VA after 1650.

Carlisle is an English Place name for the town in Cumberland derived from the British ker = fort + Romano-British settlement named Luguvalium . How ker Luguvalium becomes Carlisle is yet another story.

QUARTERLY: First and Fourth, Gules on a Chief Sable Two Boars' Heads erased, for Pennington; Second, Gules A Chevron Ermine Between Three Greyhounds PPr; a Third Gules, A Chevron Ermine Between Three Mallets Argent, for Head Fort.

Descendants of Baron Taillefer-Taylor; Earls of Pennington.
CREST: A Ducal Coronet OR, Over which an Embowed Arm, Holding an Arrow.
"Consequitur Quodcumque Petit"
(He Obtains Whatever He Seeks)

Lords of Pennington Castle. According to another record the Taylor Line Begins with Taillefer, The Norman Minstral of Wm the Conqueror and was continued by the family of Taytown in the county of Kent, of which we find Hanzer Taylefer (or Taylor) in the time of Henry II.

I wish I could give you a definitive answer, but I believe the answer to you question was no or unlikely. According to _A Directory of British Peerages_ by Francis L. Leeson (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co.,1986) The title of Baron Pennington was held by a line in the Muncaster family from 1783 until it became extinct in 1917. There is no other title for Pennington listed. Sorry. Henry Sutliff

Sherwood P Prawel wrote: Family legend has that after Hastings, an ancestor was made Earl of Pennington. I have tried to check on this but can find no evidence that any such person ever existed. Can anybody shed some light on this?
