Hi, Josephine! Just thought I'd touch base with you. Back in
April, you'd sent me some information about possible family
members for my Philip McCants from Orangeburg. Well, I finally
found something beyond "must be the right one."
You'd provided me with the family of John James McCants, with
the son Robert that went to Orangeburg. Well, unless there a
second Robert McCants born in 1816 materialized in Orangeburg
County to replace him, he *is* Philip's father. I found him,
bigger than life, in the 1850 census, with Philip still in the
house (heck, he was only 15). Robert's wife is listed as
Caroline, and there's one other child listed in the household,
Lewis B, b. abt 1849.
So I've started looking to see where else I can find Robert
now....but I'm so excited! I just can't figure out how I could
have missed that darned census; it's not like I haven't looked
at it before. Nothing like something hidden right in plain
sight, is there?

I don't know much about my line, but it certainly could connect.
My great-great-grandmother is Caroline Amarentha McCants,
1856-1886. I noticed the "Amarentha" (by whatever spelling)
several times in your index list, so it gave me hope that
there's a connection *somewhere*. Her parents are Philip J.
McCants 1835-1863 and Mary Ann Elizabeth Collier 1837-1909. So
far, though, I haven't found Philip's parents. I'm still
hoping, though. I know they were in the Orangeburg area, but
I'm not sure exactly what county (and the way the state kept
moving the county lines, that's a major problem!).
