"Ed Mann's theory, and I stress it still lacks certain proof, is
that the Countess Margaret of Ulster (d. 1304) is to be
identified with a daughter of Count Arnoul II of Guines who is
said to have married "a lord of the land of Ireland" in
contemporary French genealogies of that house. I suggest that
the marriage was arranged by Arnoul II's kinswoman Eleanor of
Castile, wife of Edward I of England (lord of Ireland too, of
course). Earl Richard de Burgh of Ulster suddenly appears
described as the queen's kinsman a few months after his marriage
to Margaret probably took place, but he had not previously been
so described. Eleanor of Castile was particularly given to
arranging marriages with English lords for her French lady
cousins, and as I discuss at greater length in the article, the
Burgh marriage fits neatly into all the parameters suggested by
those other marriages between Eleanor's cousins and their
