Jonack Lynch came to SC in the 1670's, soon after Charleston was
settled. It is not known whether he came direct from Ireland or
lived a while in the West Indies, as many other colonists did
before coming to the main land. In SC his name was spelled
Jonah.
Jonah's First land grant is dated 1677. he soon owned a
considerable amount of land. last record with the name Jonah is
dated 1711.
Jonah married Margaret Johnson, who is said to be a daughter of
Gov. Sir Nathaniel Johnson. There were at least three children.
Jonah and his sons Johnson and Thomas lived in the vicinity of
Charleston, but later generations moved further up the state.
A John Lynch who lived in the Charleston area during the early
days has not been identified. In 1679 John Lynch and two others
were appointed to arbitrate a dispute over land. SC Hist. Gen.
Mag. Vol 20, page 42.
From Miscellaneous Records of Charleston County - 1714-1717,
page 233: "John Lynch, late of the Island of Jamaica but now of
Charles Town, Gent." buys 710 acres of land in Berkeley County
in Wando Neck on the Wando River - price 400 pounds. Called
"Lynch's Grove Plantation". Final payment to James Brown made
Mar 21, 1718. Wit: Richard Alein, Gilbert Jones and Thomas
Lynch. William Rhett, Jr, attorney for John Lynch. page 246.
1729 - John Lynch, late of London, but now residing in the
Island of Jamaica in America. (Hotten).
