Founder of the SC family was Jonack or Jonah Lynch, younger son of Thomas of Galway, Ireland. A Thomas Lynch was Governor of Jamaica 1670 to 1674, relationship unknown.

Jonack Lynch came to SC in the 1670's, soon after Charleston was settled. It is not known whether he came direct from Ireland or lived a while in the West Indies, as many other colonists did before coming to the main land. In SC his name was spelled Jonah.

Jonah's First land grant is dated 1677. he soon owned a considerable amount of land. last record with the name Jonah is dated 1711.

Jonah married Margaret Johnson, who is said to be a daughter of Gov. Sir Nathaniel Johnson. There were at least three children. Jonah and his sons Johnson and Thomas lived in the vicinity of Charleston, but later generations moved further up the state.

A John Lynch who lived in the Charleston area during the early days has not been identified. In 1679 John Lynch and two others were appointed to arbitrate a dispute over land. SC Hist. Gen. Mag. Vol 20, page 42.
