Emporer BASIL I of the East Roman Empire

ABT 0831 - 0887

ID Number: I56926

  • TITLE: Emporer
  • RESIDENCE: Constantinople
  • BIRTH: ABT 0831
  • DEATH: 0887
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1945] [S2437]
Father: CONSTANTINE (Konstantinos)
Mother: PANKALO

Family 1 : EUDOCIA INGERINA

Notes

"For the latest scholarly examination of the ancestry of Basil, see C. Settipani, _Nos ancetres de l'Antiquite_, especially p.187. Settipani shows Basil as son of Pankalo and her husband, perhaps named Constantine, in turn shown as a maternal grandson of the emperor Leo V.
Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (141A:15), states that it is uncertain whether Basil or the Emporer Michael III was the father of the Emporer Leo VI.

Gene Gurney's "Kingdoms of Europe", in its listing of Emporers, has Emporer Leo VI as the son of Emporer Michael III of the preceeding dynasty. The well researched book, "History of the Byzantine Empire", by A.A. Vasilev, makes mention of the fact that Michael III adopted Basil, who was of humble and unknown parentage, as his son. This could be the source of confusion. According to Vasilev, Basil was born in Chariouplis, Macedonia and was probably of mixed Armenian and Slavic ancestry. As an unknown youth, he came to Constantinople to seek his fortune, and there attracted the attention of courtiers by his tall stature, his enormous strength, and his ability to break in the wildest horses. Word of him reached Emporer Michael III, who took him into his court and fell entirely under his influence. Basil assasinated the Emporer's uncle, Bardas, who had, for all practical purposes, taken the reins of government into his own hands. Michael then made him co-emporer. After about a year, Basil began to
suspect that Michael was plotting against him and had the Emporer assasinated.
Basil was a capable ruler, and under him the Empire became argueably the strongest power in Europe. He gained much territory, replenished the exhausted treasury, and erected 100 churches. He began a legal reform which may be described as revival of Justinian Law, which his successors continued and completed after his death. His reign was from 867 to 886.
Basil gradually pushed the border with the eastern Arabs in Asia Minor eastward. He formed an alliance with the German Roman Emporer, Louis (or Ludwig) II (RIN 2139) for the purpose of pushing the western Arabs out of Italy and Sicily, but it did not succeed and was soon dissolved. He engaged Louis in a heated correspondence regarding Louis' adoption of
the Imperial title. A noteworthy fact regarding Basil's reign is that he was able to stay at peace with all his neighbors except the Arabs."
