GARNETT, Thomas Stuart [1825-1863] Thomas Stuart Garnett was born in Westmorland County, Virginia on April 19, 1825. He attended the Virginia Military Institute [VMI] from August 1840 to October 1841 when he resigned. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1845 and returned to Caroline County Virginia to practice law from 1845 to 1846. He served as a first lieutenant, adjutant and surgeon in the 1st Virginia Infantry Regiment and was fighting in Mexico in 1846. Promoted twice for gallantry in military service, he briefly returned in 1848 to practice law in Westmorland and New Kent counties. He was Captain in the Westmorland Cavalry in 1861 and was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the 48th Virginia Infantry Regiment on June 27, 1861. He was detailed to the job of procuring arms, tents and equipment for the regiment. From March 1st to March 31st of 1862 he was hospitalised in Richmond but returned to duty commanding the regiment from April 28 to May 5 1862. He suffered from severe rheumatism and was sent sick to Staunton where he remained in hospital until May 9th. Thomas Stuart Garnett commanded the 2nd Brigade from June 12, 1862 but suffered from numerous bouts of rheumatism and pain. On August 9, 1862 he was wounded in the left thigh at Cedar Run and was subsequently hospitalised at Gordonsville. On January 23, 1863 he was promoted to the rank of Colonel, the brigade commander recommending this promotion with the words: "there being no doubt as to his competency". Thomas Stuart Garnett was shot in the throat at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863 while commanding his brigade. He died the following day at the age of just 38 years. He left a widow and five children. His body laid in state at the Capitol in Richmond and "every honor a heroic people could bestow was paid to him". He was buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond on May 10, 1863.
