Notes

"John and Mary moved to Monroe Co., Alabama Territory by 1816 and are found in the Wilcox Co. census for years 1820-1840. John McCants of the Alabama Territory chose Thomas Gordon to represent him by instrument dated Nov 14 1818, and witnessed by Ia. B. McConnell. He received his share of James McCants estate proven from records in 1816 West Feliciana Parish, LA.

His Will, dated Sep 15 and filed 5 Oct 1846. Wit: Wm T. McCants, his nephew, Ausburn Henry and Robert T. Wilson. He apparently was a widow as no wife is mentioned. He left land to each of his three sons."

Received a negro man named BRASS and boy named DERRICK and likewise the remaining half land I now live upon from his father Thomas's Will, 17 Jun 1791.

"The first record of John McCants was his listing in the 1816 Census for Monroe County, Mississippi Territory. The known birthplaces of his children indicate that he arrived beteen 1812 and 1816. Part of Monroe County became part of Wilcox County when it was created in 1819."
