Mother: Mary GATEWOOD |
Larkin, Mary and most of their children Ann, Benjamin R, Mildred
S, Mary Jane, James, Susan F and William Thomas are buried in
the family graveyard located where they settled. This grave
yard is located about 3/4 miles south of the Mammoth Cave
National Park southern boundry and about 2 miles NW of Park
City, KY.
Traveling North on Bald Knob road off Hwy 31W about 1.3 miles to
the NW corner of the park Mammoth golf course and then bearing
left (NW) take an old wagon road or trail, bearing left at each
fork, about 1.1. miles. The fenced in (1993) cemetery is in a
cedar thicket and difficult to spot. The cemetery contains
about 40 graves of which only 5 are marked with monuments and 3
with field stones on which names or initials have been chiseled
in. The rest of the graves are identified with unmarked field
stones. The identified graves are those of Charlie and Allen
Higginbotham and Eliza J. Madison, W. R. William and Charley A.
Buckingham and Susan Higginbotham. Milly and her husband Robert
Davidson graves are marked by a single monument.
Sometime after their arrival in the Knob area it is believed the
family settled in a valley 1 mile NW of Bald Knob (present
location of park Mammoth Resort. This valley was located 2.9
miles NW of a settlement known than as three Forks (now Park
City) and about 1.5 miles North of the Louisville and Nashville
Turnpike.
The settlement was located at the point where the Bardstown Road
and the Glasgow Road joined the Louisville and Nashville
Turnpike thus the name Three Forks. A stagecoach relay station
was located there during the 1820's. By 1837 a post office had
been established with William Bell appointed the first
Postmaster and the settlement became known as Bell's Tavern.
They are listed on the 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 Census
records of Edmonson Co. KY.
Malinda Howard was listed in the hsld of Larkin Higginbotham on
the 1850 Edmonson County KY Census, age 75 born in VA.
1860 Census shows Larkin was 65 years old, engaged in farming
with real estate valued at $1000 and personal property valued at
$300. Mary was listed at 66 years old. The census showed that
Larkin and Mary could read and write but none of their children
could.
Larkin prepared his will on 22 July 1863 and on 12 Oct 1863 his
will was presented to the Edmonson County Court for probate;
certified and recorded in Will Book 1 pages 102-103. Exec: son,
Benj Higginbotham and my friend A. Kirtley. Attest: Sanford
Mitchell and James Higginbotham."
