The old log house built by Wiley Corley has been moved to
downtown Florien, LA.
Around 1854 the three brothers Wiley, Zacchaeus II, and P.
Larkin Corley decided to move with their families to the great
new state of Texas. Perhaps it was the heroic stories and
fabulous tales that attracted the men to Texas whose statehood
was declared in 1845. The three families equipped themselves
with covered wagons and all the supplies they would need and
made their journey with Texas as their goal. Traveling with
them were several other families to include Wiley Woolley,
several Leach families, and probably others. They arrived
finally at the Sabine River and finding it impossible to cross,
pitched camp to wait for the water to go down. Some of the
families planted quick maturing crops and even corn to help
replenish their food supplies. When the waters finally receded,
they did not move on. Perhaps they stayed to gather their
crops, perhaps they were tired, perhaps the land was so
beautiful - and their quest for heroism in Texas burned low. For
whatever reason, they never reached their destination of Texas.
Wiley, the oldest of the three brothers, patented land in Sabine
Parish Court House in 1859. Wiley and Zacchaeus both married
Leaches though they were not sisters. Larkin married Eliza Jane
Fitts.
From these three Corleys have descended hundreds of what we call
Louisiana Corleys today most of whom still live in Sabine
Parish, LA. The two brothers Clinton and Volentine remained in
AL living on the land granted to their father for his service in
Washington's Army.
Wiley and Mary Ann Leach had 10 children all born in AL before
the covered wagon trek to Texas. Noah Brown Corley, the
youngest child, died shortly before they moved from Alabama.
Wiley patented land on Toro Creek a few miles southeast of the
present town of Florien, LA where he farmed and had a saw mill.
A part of what is believed to be the original double-pen house
still stands on that property today. There were two nearby
water mills on the creek, one belonging to Wiley. Here he sawed
rough lumber, ground grain, and utilized it in as many ways as
possible. Wiley died of tuberculosis in 1864.
