Rev. William Ellis had sold, on 25 Mar 1799, one acre of his own
land, on which the church was built and where William Arvin Sr.
and Margaret B.Harding were married, to the Trustees of the
Baptist Church and Society. One of the trustees was James
Jeffress, grandfather of Ann Jeffress Blackwell who, as will be
seen, married William and Margaret's son, William Arvin Jr.
William Arvin Sr. purchased the initial tracts of Lunenburg Co.
land in 1814 in or near what was then the postal station of
Double Bridges. Priorto that, he had owned land in Pittsylvania
Co., as proven by the 1815 tax list of that county, which named
"William Arvin of Lunenburg Co." That the 1814 purchases were
his first ownership of land in Lunenburg Co. areproven by the
Lunenburg County Processioner's Returns, a periodic survey of
land boundaries, which do not name him until after his 1814
acquisitions. Locating the land is made easy by his will, which
stipulated that one acre was to be reserved asa cemetery for
himself and other members of the family. The land is located
approximately 1-1/2miles north of Double Bridges slightly west
of Rte. 683. The community is found at the junction of Ledbetter
Creek and North Meherrin River in the northwest quadrant of
Lunenburg Co.
William purchased his land from the estate of Benjamin Tatum.
Benjamin had purchased land in 1799 "between Juniper Creek and
North Meherrin River;" the 1801 sale of William's father's land
showed that their father's land was "on the waters of Hurricane
Creek" and named Benjamin Tatum as adjacent to the property. The
conclusion might be arrived at that William had therefore
purchased land adjacent to his father's, whereas the location of
the Arvin cemetery demonstrates that BenjaminTatum must have
owned more than one parcel.
Benjamin Tatum's daughter Orena (or Oranie) had married
William's uncle, William Orsemus Fullilove, who participated in
the 1814 sale, which tells us that this was a transaction
between family members. Mr. Fullilove's activity is somewhat
surprising, because he was then living in Madison Co. KY and
aged 64. The documents conveying the acreage to William Arvin do
not indicate that Mr. Fullilove had executed his bond for clear
title in Kentucky, as was customary, but rather that he had
journeyed to Lunenburg County and there made his personal
appearance (Orena had died by 1814).
There is an unresolved puzzle concerning where William and his
wife lived between their marriage in 1807 and his purchase of
land in 1814 that is not answered by his ownership of land in
Pittsylvania Co. He was enumerated in the 1810 census of
Lunenburg Co., which leads to the opinion that his residence was
there. It may be that he and his wife lived with her father, or
that they were counted while in Lunenburg Co.on a visit, but
nothing can be determined from an inspection of thecensus
record. The fair copy of that census was arranged in
alphabetical order, and neighbors or relatives cannot be
ascertained.
Some researchers believe that William Arvin Sr. named his land
"Happy Hill." However, Evelyn Ferguson Arvin....."
