This is what I have written about John Hawkins (above) who was
my ancestor:
Ann Stinson [SMTP:[email protected]]
John Hawkins was transported to Maryland in 1666 with his
father, Henry Hawkins, and his mother, Eleanor Hawkins. In 1681,
John Hawkins was on the Tax List for Charles Co, MD, being
assessed for 1800 lbs tobacco - a relatively large amount.
In 1689, John Hawkins, Gent., signed "Declaration of
Remonstrance" to curb rumors that Papists had leagued with the
Indians to cut off Protestants in the Province. His daughter's
father-in-law, John Bayne, also, signed the declaration that the
rumors were not true.
In 1689, John Hawkins along with others addressed King William
and Queen Mary on behalf of the Protestants of Calvert Co. MD: "
--wee your Majties loyall and dutiful Protestant Subjects in
these our Addresses humbly crave by your Majties care and
prudence to be freed and enlarged, & that the Government
together with your Majesties favour, and a lasting Settlement
may be again restored to the Rt Honble the Lord Baltemore - -"
(Lord Baltimore favored religious freedom).
An inventory of John Hawkins' estate in Prince George County,
March 26, 1707, indicated that his wife was deceased. The estate
received payment from Walter Bayne (John's son-in-law). Henry
Hawkins (John's brother) and Hickford Leman were the
administrators.
The will of Henry Hawkins, John Hawkins' father, left 100 acres
called "Goat's Lodge", "Hawkins Purchase" (formerly called "Fair
Fountain" which was bought of Capt Josias Fendall who took the
office of Governor of MD in 1658), and land formerly in Charles
Co near Piscataway and now in Prince George's Co called "Hawkins
Lott" to John Hawkins in 1698.
In June, 1696, There was an Indenture from John Hawkins,
Planter,
to Thomas Hutchison for "The Two Friends" formerly in St. Marys
Co. for John Hawkins and Elizabeth Hawkins.
In 1696/97 John Hawkins, his brother, Henry, William Barton,
Phillip Hoskins and John Hanson were Vestrymen in the Port
Tobacco Parish where there were 346 taxables.
An inventory for Jonathon Wilson, "inholder",filed 7/30/1701 in
Prince George's County indicated that John Hawkins was one of a
list of people who owed the inn a small amount.
John Hawkins I was a Justice of the Peace and a Judge of the
Circuit Court of Prince George's County, MD.

DEATH: Ancestral File 9HTL-6F says d bef 1795 Wythe, VA.
From: Randy Jones Subject: Re: WHITTEN of MO, or WHITTEN of MO
w/ VA origins Date: Saturday, June 12, 1999 11:04 AM
A group of Whittens were settled in to the Tazewell Co. area
(southwestern) of Virginia. The name derives from Witten. The
earliest Witten to the area was Thomas J. WITTEN (1719-85) and
his wife Elizabeth CECIL, who settled what was then Montgomery
Co., VA c.1767. The family was prolific and have settled
throughout the country, although some I believe are still in
Tazewell.

80 years in
January next. Enlisted under Capt. Thomas Mastin, Lt. James
Maxwell in June
1776. Acted as a Spy on the frontier.
Another piece of documentation for the fact that thomas J.
Witten was not a minister is as follows; the home he built in
Tazewell Co., VA is now a historical museum called HISTORIC CRAB
ORCHARD MUSEUM & PIONEER PARK. It contains not only the home of
Thomas Witten and Elizabeth Cecil but many other buildings of
the same period brought to the area to help preserve the history
of the area. Thomas Witten was one of the first settlers of that
area. He is buried across the road from the museum and because
of his fear of the Indians digging him up for his scalp, his
grave remains unmarked at his original request. The Pisgah
Church across the street from the home of Thomas Witten and
Elizabeth Cecil "is included in the Big Car Orchard Historic and
Archaeological Complex which is listed with the National
register of Historic Places, the Virginia Landmark Register, and
the Register of United Methodist Historic Sites." This is from
PISGAH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH-2 Centuries of Faith 1793-1993,
compiled by Terry W. Mullins, 1993. On pg 1 of the same; "The
land now known as Pisgah originally deeded to John Shelton,
Patrick Henry and later William Ingles, was sold to Thomas
Witten, who along with his family, became the first permanent
white settlers of Tazewell County. Thomas and his family,
including 5 sons, Philip, Jeremiah, Thomas, James, and William
had moved from Maryland to Walker's Creek in Giles county where
they lived on the New River for a time. Then Thomas, along with
his son-in-law, John Greenup, moved to Crab Orchard at Pisgah on
the Clinch River about 1769-1771." Thomas donated the land for
the church and the first minister was Rev. John Kobler. Pg. 4
"As a result of Rev. Kobler's preaching, nine white persons and
two black persons were converted and a congregation formed in
1793. Among Kobler's first Tazewell converts were Jeremiah and
Sarah Skaggs Witten, William and Letitia Laird Witten, John and
Sarah Peery, Elizabeth Witten Greenup, Samuel Ferguson, Isabella
Ferguson (Bailey) and two unnamed black persons. Jeremiah
Witten, William Witten and Elizabeth Greenup were all children
of the original settler--Thomas Witten."
Thomas J. Witten, Sr, my 5g grandfather, and 2 of his sons,
James and Thomas J. Witten, Jr., my 4g grandfathers (I decend
from 2 of the sons of Thomas, SR.) were all in the RevWar and
were 3 of my 4 original Patrons into the DAR.
I have been hearing family history since I can barely remember
from my grandmother, Cynthis Rebecca Witten Hoilman, who was
very proud of her heritage and the Regent of her local DAR
chapter in the 1940's. She would have mentioned it every chance
she got if he had been a minister and I have never heard this
before nor can I find any reference to it anywhere in Tazewell
Co., VA.
I am also a member of the Historic Crab Orchard Museum and a
life member of the Tazewell County Historical Society. Hope this
helps, Paul. If you would like additional documentation or for
me to copy something from my books for you, will be happy to;

C9341. ANNALS OF TAZEWELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA FROM 1800 TO 1924, 2
volumes, by John Newton Harman. 467, 653 pp., illus., indexed,
paper. (1922, 1925), repr. 1999. $95.00
Tazewell County in southwestern Virginia was formed from Russell
and Wythe counties in 1799. Notwithstanding its considerable and
unique contribution to Virginia history, Tazewell County takes
on added importance for Virginia genealogists for lying to
adjacent to the great Augusta migration trail which traversed
southern Virginia.
While this book is nearly 75 years old at this point, it is
nonetheless a colossal undertaking and still the starting point
for Tazewell genealogy and history. It is a vast extraction o f
county court records. Volume 1 contains extracts of court
orders, wills and deeds, names of all civil and military
officers, all lawyers admited to the bar, all preachers licensed
and an exact copy of the Tazewell marrige registers from 1800 to
1852, every deed made to churches of all denominations from 1800
to 1922, the names of all Tazwwell representatives in the
General Assembly of Virginia from 1800 to 1852, and a list of
Revolutionary pensioners. Volume II continues the principal
features of Volume I from 1853, with marriage records to 1868,
the names of all devisers and devisees of wills to 1924, lists
of Tazewell soldiers in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and
World War II, various court orders, and a fairly complete list
of Tazewell churches and church officers in 1924. The concluding
250 pages consist of genealogies of the following pioneer
families: Bandy, Barns, Bowing, Chapman, Couling, Crockett,
Deskins-Maxwell-Witten-Fields, Gillespie, Gose, Graham,
Graybeal-Greear, Greever, Hankins, Harman, Higginbotham, Holmes,
Hopkins, Laird, Linkous, Litz, Lockhart, McGuire, Martin,
Maxwell, Mays, Moore, Peery, Sparks, Stras, Thompson, Tynes,
Ward, Whitley, Witten, Wohlford-Mustard, Yot and Young - nearly
40,000 persons.
