Robert was mentiond in both his father's and mother's wills. Proof of his relationship to Hugh R & Thomas N. McCants is given in the Mesne Conveyance Office entry Charleston, SC. Feb 14, 1814 Thomas N. and Hugh R. minor sons of Robert McCants. BK 1, p. 187, .


- Robert moved from the Cedar Swamp Section of Craven Co to Charleston Dist. He settled above the Old Bigham Church, and opened a house of entertainment on the great throughfare road to the city of Charleston.


"Robert m. Martha Hamilton sister of Elizabeth who m. Wm Lindsay De Hay --thus paternal and maternal grandmothers of Arthur Hamilton De Hay, Sr. were sisters. Robert rec'd from his father, Thomas, in his will 17 Jun 1791, a negro boy named Cesar and likewise a tract of land containing 100 acres adjoining the tract I now live on."
