Father: Henry CARY of "The Forest" Mother: Judith LOCKEY |
"the daughter of Capt. Henry Cary, a planter who was well known
as the master builder of Williamsburg. Anne Cary Langhorne soon

Benjamin Harrison III of Charles City County."
Msg From Karen Wood [email protected], 22 Dec 2003 Subject:
New Benjamin Harrison theory
"It's been many years since we've talked. Way back when, I was
working with Wilmer Kerns, trying to sort out the Benjamin
Harrison d. 1761 Cumberland Co VA m Priscilla _. At that point,
based on previous research, etc, I was fairly sure, based on
some assumptions and preponderous of evidence, that Priscilla
was the daughter of Henry Cary.
NOW, I'm not so sure. There is a relationship, certainly between
this Benjamin and Henry Cary(m Anne Edwards as second wife), but
I THINK, and I think I can prove a better case, for Ben being
the nephew of Henry Cary of Ampthill.
Ann Cary, d/o Henry & Judith Lockey Cary, m 1 Maurice Langhorne,
2 Benjamin Harrison, 3 Charles Stuckey. She was named as Ann
Stuckey in her father's will of 1720. Maurice Langhorne d. bet
1695/1698 in Warwick Co VA, leaving son John Langhorne, who
married Mary Rice (I descend from this couple as well). By bef
21 Jun 1700, Benjamin Harrison had married the widow Ann
Langhorne, as he's named as part of a suit invovling Ann. Ann
Langhorne had named her father, Henry Cary, as guardian for son
John on Maurice's death. Later, there were guardian's appointed
for the orphans of Benjamin Harrison dec'd! So apparently he and
Ann Cary Langhorne Harrison had children. I believe they were
James d. 1736 in King William Co VA (m.Elizabeth READ, d/o
Thomas Read and Ann LOCKEY) and Benjamin d. 1761 Cumberland Co
VA who married Priscilla _______. She may, in fact, still be a
daughter of Henry Cary and Anne Edwards, but she is not named in
his will. The assumption that she was his daughter was based on
the deeds from Henry to Benjamin in the 1740's for little money,
and the promises made to Benjamin by Archibald Cary (s/o Henry &
Anne Edwards Cary) and Clement Read for 1000 acres to be given
by them to Ben's (d. 1761) two sons, Benjamin (d. 1810) and Cary
Harrison.
My theory, though outside of DNA I can't prove beyond a
reasonable doubt) is that Benjamin Harrison (d. 1761) was the
s/o Benjamin Harrison (d bef 1720) and Ann Cary (Langhorne).
Ben m Priscilla _ (Possibly Cary) and had the children ;
Anne m Daniel Allen
Priscilla
Elizabeth m Thomas Booth, Phillip King, William Ratliff
Lockey m Thomas Word
Mary "Polly" m Sion Spencer
Cary m Sarah Bell (d/o Dr. David Bell & Judith Cary, d/o Henry
Cary & Anne Edwards) Sarah Bell had previously married John
Langhorne, who I also believe was her cousin, s/o Maurice
Langhorne and Anne Cary!)
Benjamin m Elizabeth Wilbourne (my line)
Martha (apparently never married?)
Rebecca m Henry Bell, her cousin, s/o David Bell & Judith Cary.
One of the other reasons for believing that Benjamin Harrison's
wife, Priscilla was the daughter of Henry Cary & Anne Edwards,
was that Benjamin (d. 1811) was in the household of Judith Bell,
as a young man, apparently living there afer his father's death.
We had thought this was because of the relationship between
Priscilla and Henry Cary, but I believe it was because of the
relationship of Benjamin, as nephew to Henry Cary, s/o his
sister, Ann Cary Langhorne Harrison Stuckey.
I don't know if anyone else has proposed that theory. I have
some documents that tend to back it up, such as the suits, and
the gaurdianships, but can't fully prove it, as there was no
will found for Benjamin Harrison, d. between 1700 and 1720!
That would be a great help, if anyone has any will of a Benjamin
that I haven't found. All in all, I still don't have a father
for Benjamin d. between 1700 & 1720, but... that's another
story.
Let me know what you think. It's a busy time of the year, and it
will wait until you have time. I've lost your mother's email, so
I went to the repository to find your's. I'll happily send along
reference's for documents. Maybe Wilmer has found the same
thing, or I'm hoping so!
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a healthy Happy New Year!
