"After talking with several older residents in the area we now
know that what was documented as the "Wyatt Smith" cemetery in
the 1960's is actually the Bankston cemetery, which was common
knowledge around there. There is a Wyatt R. Smith and his wife,
Irene, buried in the Bankston cemetery so I can understand how
the mistake was made.
Back to what you are probably more interested in - the real
"Wyatt Smith" cemetery. Thanks to your webpages, I know why
there were also two Ellzey graves in the cemetery - Saryntha A.
Ellzey was Euseba's daughter.
The cemetery is overgrown and not kept up like the other
cemeteries we visited in the area. Two different uncles told us
they thought there was a cemetery somewhere around there, but
could NOT tell us the name of the cemetery.
In this cemetery, there were five NEW headstones on five graves,
though I don't yet know who placed these markers there, if there
are unmarked graves (there was a grave outlined with bricks that
did not appear to have a headstone), and if the dates on the new
headstones are accurate. Here's what they say:
Euseba F. Smith 1809 - 1878
Wyatt Smith 1809 - 1814 (Yes - that is the date on the new
headstone...)
Saryntha A. Ellzey 1833 - 1915
Laurah Luella Ellzey 1862 - 1863
Annie Pittman 1878 - 1881
The date on the Wyatt Smith headstone does not make any sense
and I wonder if it is really Wyatt Smith, husband of Euseba, and
the gravesite marker was in error and the death date should be
something like 1874.
We also have excerpts from a written family history (my
husband's aunt) that states that Jeremiah Smith is the father of
Wyatt Smith, but I don't have this documentation here with me -
it's still with my husband in Lousiana. The document also
states that Wyatt and Euseba's oldest three sons were lost in
the Civil war and, if I remember correctly, they had eight
children, and raised eight others.
I noticed there were other Ellzey's buried in the Silver Springs
cemetery, which is about 1/2 mile up the road from the "Wyatt
Smith (John S. Ellzey)" cemetery.
One other thing. The document about Wyatt and Jerimiah Smith
that I mention in the email text below also mentions Jerimiah's
wife, which is a "Miss Holly or Hollande." The author of the
document did now know her first name."
"While in Lousiana we located the graveyard where Wyatt Smith is
buried at the "old homestead" but the death date on Wyatt
Smith's grave marker, which was placed there by Jean Ott Roberts
(and Jerry Alford) a few years ago, makes him five years old
when he died. I believe that is likely a mistake and the date
may be 1874. Here's what the markers had:
Wyatt Smith
1809 - 1814
Euseba F. Smith
1809 - 1878
Saryntha A. Ellzey
1833 - 1915
Laurah Luella Ellzey
1862 - 1863
Annnie Pittman
1879 - 1881"
