As soon as William and Martha were marred in Lawrence County,
Tennessee, they left for Mississippi, apparently to join her
Riddell kin who already lived there. They traveled down the
Natchez Trace, each riding a horse and each leading a pack
horse. The trace had been cut out of the woods. The stumps were
left just low enough that wagons and carts could pass over them.
It must have been an adventure for the two honeymooners.
At some point in it's history the trace got to be a place for
highwaymen and cutthroats. We don't know what the conditions
were when William and Martha traveled it. Stories indicate that
Martha would not have been afraid, just cautious.
He severed in the Confederate army. At first he avoid
conscription. When his wife saw the conscriptors coming she
would blow a cow horn they used to call the hands in from the
field for lunch, whereupon he would go and hide in a hollow
tree. When the conscriptors were gone, Martha would blow the
horn again and he would leave his hiding place. He once hid in
some tall grass and one of the conscriptors almost stepped on
him without ever seeing him. He later allowed the conscriptors
to catch him, intentionally we understand. At some point he was
captured by the Yankees. He was a great tobacco chewer and
washed clothes for the Yankee officers to provide himself
tobacco.
His granddaughter, Estelle Horn Alderman, has a picture of him
and his wife. Estelle says he had blue eyes and red hair that
would portray a Scotch-Irish ancestry. Estelle also says his
wife was said to be half indian. In this picture, she has the
dark good looks that could portray an Indian ancestry.
John William Horn, said that when they got to the Attala-Leake
county line in Mississippi--his wife apparently had Riddle
relatives there--they bought a section (640 acres) of land and
built a house. William Wilbert Horn cut shingles with a frow
and sided and roofed the house with them. After the war-in the
hard times in the South during reconstruction following the
Civil war--they sold off some of the land. As the children grew
up and got married, they apparently gave parcels to them.
His gravestone shows his death date as March 24, 1890, a Masonic
Emblem, and the words "Age 59 years". If the 59 years is
correct, he would have been born about 1831. In the 1850
Lawrence County, Tennessee census, he is shown as living in
household #277, the home of his sister Martha Angeline Horn and
her husband John Holland Riddell and being 18 years old at the
time. GEDCOM File : BURGESS.ged
