"1850 Census Beaufort Co., NC: John Hodges, 57, male farmer,
25,000 (real estate) ; Sarah Hodges, 52,f; Noah Hodges, 21, m;
Mary Hodges, 18, f; Robert Hodges, 15, m; James Hodges, 13, m.
The following records were copied by the author from papers
owned by Miss Eva Hodges of Greenville NC, whose father the late
Frank M. Hodges of Greenville received the records from his
sister, Mrs. Mattie (Hodges) Credle by letter dated July 27,
1915. (Mrs. Credle was first married to Gov. Flynn and second
to Wm. Credle.)
"Out grand father John Hodges was the son of James and Charity
Judkins and was born in the yr. 1792; was married in 1814 to
Sallie, daughter of Harry and Millie Griffin Perry;
grand-father died June 1880 in the 88th year of his age.
Grand-mother Jan. 6, 1881 in 83rd yr.
(1) Henry Hodges (called Harry) born Aug. 14, died April 6 (or
26) 1870; married first on Nov. 15, 1838 Marcella Ann Louisa
Keel; and second on Sept. 29, 1872 Melinda Askew. There was
issue by both marriages (q.v.)
(2) Francis Perry Hodges born Jan. 22, 1818 died June 5, 1893;
married Dec. 13, 1845 Miriam W. Robinson and had issue (q.v.)
(3) John Gray Hodges born Sept. 16, 1820 married about 1849
Mary Etta Stancill, daughter of Henry Stancill of Pitt Co., NC
and wife Margaret . They were living in Beaufort Co., NC at
1850 Census with a son John aged seven months.
(4) James Reading Hodges born May 5, 1823; died in youth
(Presumably prior to March 12, 1873, at which date his father
names his youngest son James)
(5) Edwin Gorham Hodges born Apt. 1, 1826 died ?; married
Olivia Newell (daughter of Jesse and Eliza). At 1850 Census he
was not married but headed a household composed of Robert
Hodges, his wife Mary Ann, their five children, and Mimey Hodges
aged 78 years, who was (presumably) the mother of Robert Hodges
who was 35 years of age) See census later on
(6) Noah Perry Hodges born March 23, 1829; married August 27,
1851 Martha A. Latham. (They were married by Thomas Latham
J.P.) Noah was called Noah Benjamin Hodges in previous records
furnished by Miss Eva Hodges of Greenville, NC.
(7) Mary Louisa Hodges born Aug. 28, 1831 married James Henry
Ward. Children (a) Burroughs (b) John © Bettie Gray Ward.
(8) Robert Thomas Hodges born Sept. 20, 1834; married Sept. 26,
1856 Ann Eliza Latham (daughter of Dempsey Latham of Beaufort
Co., NC and wife Marine Griffin) and had issue (q.v.)
(9) James Wilson Hodges born March 12, 1837 married first Mary
Brown of Pitt Co., NC daughter of Richard Brown and wife Nancy
?. He married second on Nov. 3, 18 ?? Amanda Stancill from Pitt
Co., NC daughter of Henry Stancill and wife Margaret Latham.
There was issue by both marriages.
Note: There are some errors in the records below which Mrs.
Credle sent to her brother Frank Hodges. She said: "Simon
Hodges, brother of John, was Cousin Hatty Gorham's father". See
"Gorham Family" which shows that Mehitable Hodges who married
Edwin Gorham was not daughter of Simon Hodges but was dau. of
Richard Hodges and wife Annie Peekins.
1. The eldest son, Henry Hodges married twice first to Marcella
Keel of Pitt County. 2nd to Malinda Askew of Martin Co., NC and
left 6 children, three by each marriage.
2. The 2nd son (our father) Francis Perry married Meriam W.
Robinson, daughter of Benjamin and Sallie Wallice Robinson of
Carteret Co., NC. To them were born eleven children, four sons
and seven daughters. Three of each are living.
3. John Gray Hodges married Mary Ella Stancill, daughter of
Henry and Margaret Stancill of Pitt Co., NC had 8 or nine
children one only living Edwin Graham Hodges married Olivia
Ewell (daughter of Jesse and Eliza) of Martin Co., NC and left
nine children--four are living. (One of them John Walter Hodges
having died during last month in Jax. Fla.)
4. Noah Perry (Benj.) Hodges married Martha Latham daughter of
Alfred and Lucinda Hardison Latham of Beaufort Co., NC, died
during Civil War, leaving five children.
5. Robert T. Hodges married Ann Eliza Latham daughter of Dempsey
& Marine Griffin Latham of Beaufort Co., and left three
children, one son and 2 daughters.
6. James Wilson Hodges was twice married 1st to Mary Brown
daughter of Richard and Nancy Brown of near Greenville, Pitt
Co., 2nd to Amanda Stancill daughter of Henry and Margaret
Stancill of Pitt Co., left 6 children--3 sons and 3 daughters.
7. Mary Louise Hodges (only daughter of John and Sallie Hodges)
was married in 1853 to John Ward of Martin Co., NC. To them
were born seven children, 3 of whom, 2 sons and 1 daughter are
now living.
To them were born 9 children, 8 sons, Harry, Frank P., John
Gray, Edwin Gorham, Nash Benjamin, Robert T., James Redding (who
died when a youth) James Wilson and one daughter Mary Louisa."
